705700 2008-09-17 05:56:00 I quite like Dells because I haven't ever had a problem with them over the years (apart from a broken speaker which they swiftly replaced). Would recommend alienware if you wanted $3000 + laptops though :D SPARTAN 860 (2618)
705701 2008-09-17 06:01:00 Another vote for Toshiba. A few models have severe design flaws, but the rest are rock-solid. Also HP/Compaq's business laptops I've found to be excellent (note I'm commenting on the hardware here, not the software - the first thing that happens to any laptop I get my hands on is a format and fresh OS install). Stay well away from Acer, they have a rather high failure rate, as evidenced by the number of posts on this forum complaining about them.

I've also found Dell laptops to be rather good - we deploy them on a large scale at my workplace.

705702 2008-09-17 08:25:00 The Lenovo ThinkPads are built like tanks and their design is fantastic. Its quite a reasonable brand as well with good features. beeswax34 (63)
705703 2008-09-17 08:47:00 OK looking at buying a laptop for my daughter for uni.
What is your daughter studying? Anything that may require specialised software, with specific hardware, or Operating system equirements?

705704 2008-09-17 09:45:00 If you do get a PC with lots of bloatware included-be sure to use PC Decrapifier to automate the software removal process for you-quick and efficient.
Also, if your daughter is doing designing or using specialised software-you may need to get a faster laptop.

705705 2008-09-17 20:10:00 Or better yet, format the hard drive before you boot it for the first time. If they didn't supply a Vista disc, you'll have to borrow one. (It doesn't have to be the same version, as long as it supports Anytime Upgrade it'll work. :)) pcuser42 (130)

OR-try getting your hands on a legal version of XP.
The laptop will increase 2 times in speed:D

705707 2008-09-17 23:39:00 Because of the high failure rate.
You can't judge on a handful.
You need to look at the return rate on at least 100. Anything over 5% is too high for me.

I have.
Where I used to work we sold close to 200 Acer laptops to the district health board.
Only major problems we had with them were user created faults with software.
We did get the odd one with a failed hard drive but that's to be expected with laptops that are used by people who don't own them or have to pay for them to be fixed :badpc:
I think we had one or two that had mainboard failures as well.

I've noticed that Vista is actually faster than XP. Then again, a new PC helps. :D

705709 2008-09-18 04:01:00 Nothing ever goes wrong with a mac, they are like an appliance that just works.

Hmm, I've owned two Mac laptops and both failed (within warranty). Interesting definition of "nothing ever".
