705316 2008-09-16 05:07:00 Well here's the transmitter sites for freeview (www.freeviewshop.co.nz) and their frequencies

Thanks Speedy good site.

But it just gets worse!

Having reinstalled WinTV I figured I’d better scan in the DVB-S channels.

Well, the scan found 103 channels but the only ones I can view are TV One and TV2.

There are 6 Radio Stations: EPG Background – RNZ National – RNZ Concert – Tahu FM – Calvary & Kiwi.

And that’s it!

What ever have I stuffed up? :illogical

With your satellite (DVB-S) problem, what are you using for reception, Sky Dish?

With your radio those sound like the sound channels from Freeview. Are you sure you are actually tuning in FM stations on the FM radio application (usually a separate entity from the TV side on most cards) and you will need the FM aerial (usually looks like a small coil of insulated wire to be stretched out and pinned to a wall or ceiling, and plugged into your card)

705318 2008-09-16 20:29:00 Well, I recon I’ve read every post on the internet on this matter and I still haven’t cracked it.

Feersumendinn: Thanks for the links. To answer your questions. Yep, although I don’t have SKY it is a Sky Dish removed from a mate’s rental property after the tenant did a runner. :(

The radio channels are Satellite Radio Channels not attached to any TV transmission.

Now, I’ve come up with a couple more clues.

DVB-T:

When scanning the signal quality gauge goes full strip on channels 46,48,50 and the little locked box gets a tick in it but the channel doesn’t show below.

Channels 46,48,50 just so happen to be the terrestrial HD Transmissions off Te Aroha which is what I’m looking for.

DVB-S

Despite the scan producing 103 stations I can only tune TV One and TV2 but they are of excellent quality.

Ok, I have only one LNB so can someone confirm what the settings on the set-up page should be?

High Osc:

Thanks again for all your time and effort guys.

I have an HVR 4000 and also a PVR 350. The settings for WinTV and the 4000 should be the same for your 3000 card. Make sure you get the newest WinTV proggie and patches off Hauppauge UK site even though they insist we use Singapore site.

DVB-S I used to use
here are the scan details from wintv (which worked for me some time ago, I now just use DVB-T).

1600 OPTUS D1 (160.0E) : Scanning Results
# Frequency SymbolRate Polarity Found

7tp - 12483000 22500 H 9
10tp - 12519000 22500 V 20
11tp - 12519000 22500 H 20
14tp - 12546000 22500 H 13
23tp - 12644000 22500 H 9

Scan the Following:

Set the LNB's Switch 0 is fine, then change to Manual settings and scan each of TV3 and Tv1 details.

LNB:
lo osc. 10750000
hi osc. 11250000

TV3 and C4
freq: 12456000
s/rate: 22500
Linear_Horizonal
(have to manually scan this freq with wintv)

TVNZ
freq: 12483000
s/rate: 22500
Linear_horizonal

These are not FM radio stations ( at least not being received by the FM radio in your TV card which is (usually) a separate entity as I said before, and needs to be run/tuned separately), they are digital radio channels transmitted as part of the Freeview DVB-S (and DVB-T) transmission, and will work because they are in MPEG2 video and AC3 sound which is handled natively by your card (and UK software).
You must have tuned in the Freeview DVB-T channels, is it that you cant see any picture or sound on the channels (when you say this)?

When scanning the signal quality gauge goes full strip on channels 46,48,50 and the little locked box gets a tick in it but the channel doesn’t show below.
This is because your software is incorrect for NZ Freeview DVB-T (which is a different type from UK), have you a CD in the cards box that says Cyberlink Powercinema or similar, should look like this (www.hauppauge.co.uk), you will need at least this (and possible updates) to have the right codecs to allow Wintv (or other PVR progs, Mediaportal etc) to decode the picture and sound. Please read this (all)

I think you will find most of the answers you need on the links we've given you, try a post on them if you need more help/details.
With your satellite problem, you may need to re-align your dish as well as get the settings correct.

The Software CD that comes with NZ cards does look different to the UK release but Power Cinema works fine in NZ so long as you use all the patches on Hauppauge site . Overall it is crap software but it does work for both DVB-S and DVB-T although I use MediaPortal . At least with Mediaportal I can record several channels at the same time unlike Powercinema .

705322 2008-09-19 20:00:00 Well guys, having read just about every post on the Internet pertaining to this problem I finally found a Hauppauge support link so went straight to them.

Their support has been excellent, but to put anyone else out there out of their misery they tell me that there is no support for WinTV when it comes to DVB-T in New Zealand. It simply won’t work and can’t be got to work, which confirms what some of you have already alluded to. Simple as that.

However, to help me out they will send me a PowerCinema CD that they say will work. Time will tell.

So that’s where I’m up to, I just thought this bit of info may save others messing around with different versions and patches for WinTv when it’s is never going to function on Terrestrial in NZ.

Thanks to all that tried to help and I’ll update when the PowerCinema programme is installed. :thanks
B.M. (505)
705323 2008-09-19 20:27:00 B.M. Powercinema needs a few patches as well to make it work properly, they are all on Hauppauge's UK site as i said earlier.

Even once you install it PowerCinema is crap. This was a guide for setting up PowerCinema posted a while back on a 4000, but the 3000 is very similar.

You are better off looking at MediaPortal.
MediaPortal 1.0 RC2 is fairly simple to setup plus a good support forum.

705324 2008-09-19 21:16:00 Thanks for that Bantu, I'll be prepared. :)

I downloaded MediaPortal but when I looked at all the registry hacks and patches for that I got a bit Gun Shy.

A lot of the problems seem to be catering for all the different TV transmission systems around the world and not knowing which Hack or Patch applies to NZ.

However, I am tempted to give it a go. What do you think? :)

705325 2008-09-20 03:49:00 Because the current crop of TV cards are not designed with our digital system in mind, it needs a bit of 'deepest geekness' :nerd: to get them to run, if you're prepared to work at it, give it a go (but keep in mind that converting the sound and video 'within the computer', instead of within the card, means you need a powerful computer to do this, e.g. a Core2Duo at least (goes for the unit below as well)).
Alternatively, this (www.pbwellington.co.nz) will work 'out of the box' (but DVB-T only); or wait (could be a while (or forever!)) for more compatible cards; 'tis NZ's fault for being leaders in the field.
