473525 2006-07-26 02:15:00 It's like the cheese, Thomas.
"Good things take time."

Like you, I wasn't impressed at first with The Office, so I didn't bother continuing with the first series.
I gave it another try later & it grew on me enough to enjoy the repeats.
You need to watch long enough to get a good picture of the characters. My initial brief glimpse wasn't enough, I found..

But no programme appeals to everyone. You're allowed to find it unfunny.

473526 2006-07-26 03:02:00 The Office is great. I bet Thomas likes Malcolm in the Middle.
Nope wrong Wotz.
Never watched this more than a few minutes - also unfunny!
Interesting that some people think I need office experience to appreciate The Office. Well I worked in offices in the UK, USA, and New Zealand for over 30 years from big offices (several hundred) to small - just 4 of us. I had numerous laughs in quite a few. But still admit to never once found any reason to even smile at THE OFFICE.
Must be me!
And I do think some American shows are OK, Mash of course and what was that other one -Tooltime is the name that comes to me - but that was not the correct name. If you were a fan then you will know which program I mean.

473527 2006-07-26 03:08:00 I know what you mean. The Office isn't side-splittingly funny but it works on a more subtle level. You really need to know the characters to get the best out of it. I have the Christmas Specials.

Just watched Extras last night. I was disappointed. It seemed like just another vehicle for Ricky Jervais "being a prat" humour. I had hoped he might play it differently but Extras seemed like The Office transposed to a film production set. Rather liked Ben Stiller though - he was excellent sending himself up!!
My sentiments entirely.
Endless supply's of lets see how embarrassing I can be.
He does it well, but there is a limit.

473528 2006-07-26 04:47:00 I love the series, have all on DVD and Extra's as well....found that good as well but not quite as good as the office :)

I have come across others that didn't like it & didn'tfind it funny though so I can understand :)

Cheers

473530 2006-07-26 10:19:00 Is it me or is it another case of The Emperor's Clothing. I like British comedy from Professor Jimmy Edwards, Fawlty Towers, The Goon Show, Yes Minister, Navy Larks, Steptoe, etc. I have loved them all. But THE OFFICE beats me. I have watched bits of it but never yet been able to see anything the slightest bit funny. Yet it gets hailed by critics. To me it just seems boring. What do others think?

The Office is not in the same humour 'category' as the shows you mentioned. I too initially found it 'unfunny' until I realised it was a Mockumentary. I now have both series of 'The Office' as well as 'Extras'. In all fairness Thomas, the humour cannot be appreciated by watching, in your own words, 'bits of it'. The characters are rather complex and it takes time to appreciate the subtleties etc - once you see this, there is humour in almost every 'skit' and IMO there are many side splitting moments (e.g. 'The Dance' scene, Keith's job appraisal, the training session (which spawned a number of 'Free Love Highway' tributes), the scotch eggs scene, the blind dates, the dwarf / midget scene, the helpful IT technician etc etc etc).

It is also deliberately very slowly paced so it can come across as 'boring' if you're not sure what it is all about. It's best watched from the very beginning otherwise a lot of the humour will be lost. The same can be said for Extras - there are a number of subtle running 'gags'. And contrary to some posters opinion, this isn't about Ricky Gervais making a fool of himself - if you think David Brent = Ricky Gervais then it is good acting.

FYI 'The Office' won the BAFTA best sitcom three years running, in addition to a number of other BAFTA awards, and Ricky Gervais also won a US Golden Globe. More info here : news.bbc.co.uk

Yeah I reckon I have never had enough time to really watch this sort of slow paced humour. I think I am beginning to see just what people are trying to get over to me. If I want to even get a smile from this load of old rubbish(couldn't resist that - shame on me) then I do have to play my part by watching constantly.
The fact that something wins an award must I find always be treated with suspicion. Christchurch art gallery has some very expensive paintings that are incredibly bad by ANY standard - OK if done by a 5 year old (no I'm wrong there - still bad if done by a 5 year old). But critics rave over them. How many times do we see books films etc that get critics praise and are scorned by the majority. OK they also get it right sometimes. I am amused by the way architects award prizes to glass monstrosities with flat corrugated iron roofs -no roof overhang, plaster coating, staggered flooring, shoddy damp proofing etc. etc. The best being the Americans - the house they once picked as the best house ever designed in America is now falling down and needs urgent repairs etc. What has this to do with The Office? Dunno - you try and work it out.

473532 2006-07-26 23:45:00 Try watching it with someone else. That way they can tell you when to laugh, it will be a bit like having the canned laughter that accompanies most American comedy so you know it's funny. :D JackStraw (6573)

I guess the subtle wit and comedy is just over your head, especially when you can be smacked in the face with it by the likes of Home Improvement, which I personally find to be very generic and boring like most American humour.
