705802 2008-09-16 18:38:00 Catastrophic laptop accident (glass of coke) has meant we needed to remove hdd which now lives in an external drive. We need to access the MS Money files on it but they appear as write protected and no amount of Googling has provided an answer. Like all good PC users, my wife backed up the files to an external in case an event like this occurred, but these too are inaccessible from another copy of Money.
All machines run XP SP2, Money is the same version -licence etc.
Any suggestions?

705803 2008-09-16 19:07:00 If it's Vista do you have permissions? I have several times recovered money backups in the past up to about 8 years ago it was my main accounting program for when I was self employed, I never had a problem reloading backups. Are the files your looking at called money something backup? gary67 (56)
705804 2008-09-16 21:24:00 Using windows XP. Have tried opening both the original file and the back up file on the previous computer's hard drive and also the backup file she kept on a flash drive. Have tried 'repairing' the file with the repair function in the drop down menu.
No luck - still says it is unable to open the file due to the file being either read only or the drive being write protected. File is definitely not read only.
Will open an older file with *.m14 extension. Not even sure where this file came from (?archive file).

705805 2008-09-16 21:42:00 From the 'file' menu, are you using the 'open' or 'restore backup' command?
Some programs will only let you restore backup's, not open them.

705806 2008-09-16 21:50:00 You'll only be able to access them through the XP that is installed on the hard drive.

Does this make sense?

I think so . . . does that mean there is no hope?

705809 2008-09-17 11:08:00 Just in case anyone else has this problem...we solved it.
The new computer hadn't been on the net, whilst the damaged one had, consequently it had MS Money in its updated form. We updated the new one and presto, access to all the files was granted.
The link below explains part of the solution far better than I can, never loose hope!!
Thanks to those who came to our aid.
