| 705396 | 2008-09-15 20:43:00 | Are all web pages saved or cached somewhere so that even when deleted or altered, the information can be found? What about photos and videos? I heard a discussion recently where someone said that everything put on the internet "is there forever". How true is this? Consider these examples: 1. Someone posts spam or makes an offensive remark here on PF1, and a moderator deletes the post or the entire thread. Can the original be found? 2. A photo is put on a social network page such as Facebook, then it is later removed (perhaps a photo at a party that would be embarrassing). If no one else saves the photo and posts it somewhere else, can that photo still be found somewhere? 3. A newspaper website has an article showing the name of an alleged offender, but a judge rules that the person's name be removed. If the article is not mirrored somewhere else, or the information is not put elsewhere (on a blog), can the original information be accessed? 4. A wedding video is put on YouTube, but the bridesmaid doesn't like the part where she is dancing so she asks for that video to be removed. After the YouTube video is removed, can it still be found if it is not put somewhere else? ____ You get the idea here: what can be safely deleted, permanently? |
