706675 2008-09-21 02:03:00 I have a Toshiba Tecra S2 notebook that connects to the internet via a D-Link DI-524UP wireless router and an elderly Asus AAM 6000EV ADSL modem. My ISP is Telecom Xtra. After two or three satisfactory years, I’ve been having trouble with the wifi and am trying to see if it is a problem with the router. I now have an Asus WL-520GU router to try. Both wireless and cable links to the Asus router connect to the notebook without trouble, as indicated by the icons on the bottom right of the screen, and the fact that I can communicate with the router and use its setup screen, wizards etc, but the router does not appear to communicate with the modem. The WAN LED on the router shows it is seeing a connection, and the PC LED on the modem shows it thinks it has a working connection to a PC back through the router, but when I try to connect to the internet, nothing happens. When I go back to the D-Link router, all is well again. If I bypass the router altogether and plug the ADSL modem directly into the Ethernet port of the Toshiba, I get indication that the LAN is connected and working, the correct LED shows on the modem, but again I can do nothing with it. Before I started using the D-Link router some years ago, the Asus modem was connected directly to the Toshiba by Ethernet cable, and it worked fine.

Can anyone explain why the modem seems to want to work only with the D-Link router and not the Toshiba notebook or Asus router, even though it establishes a LAN connection to them? What can I do to get the Asus router to connect the laptop to the internet via the modem? I presume it is a setting problem somewhere but I have looked through the manual for the Asus router and it implies that all I have to do is plug the modem into the appropriate Ethernet port on the router, which I have done. I am using the automatic IP address arrangement appropriate (or so I think anyway) for my Telecom Xtra broadband connection and as appears to be used by the D-Link router. I can’t remember having this trouble when I first set up the D-Link router with the Asus modem, but perhaps old age has got to my memory.

I can’t help feeling I’m missing something very basic here, but I’m stuck. Any suggestions gratefully received. Apologies for this long post.

706676 2008-09-21 03:37:00 Well, it is a bit confusing that you have all those routers/modems and nothing works.
Is there a wireless card in the lappie, if so why are you trying to connect with the Asus adsl modem? Is there a firewall on the D-Link router?

Get rid of the rest. It'll be easier to figure out how to confiigure it

706678 2008-09-21 09:12:00 hmm and it all so may pay to see if the router is assigning you a IP address etc

From your start menu can you select start > Run
Type 'cmd', press enter

The command window will now open.
Can you now type 'ipconfig/all > c:\ip.txt'

On your root c:\ will now be a txt file called ip.txt with your Wireless adapter nwtwork details.
can you please copy and paste the results back here?

you may also need to specify your DNS settings. Telecom Internets settings are:
202.27.158.40
202.27.156.72

Which version of windows are you using?
