476691 2006-08-07 01:34:00 Comes in the form of a direct mail-out from NZ Domain Name Registration Ltd. at a conveniently temporary address in Auckland. They want $225 per domain name for 2 years. But wait, there's more! They'll throw in a crap MP3 player for free. Don't be a sucker. braindead (1685)
476692 2006-08-07 01:52:00 I for one won’t be sucker in.

Any way who in there right mind would pay $225 per domain name for 2 years when you can get it a lot cheaper at different registers

Who indeed Stu. Like the impossibly absurd Nigerian money scams, enough suckers apparently to make it well worth while for the scammers.

476694 2006-08-07 02:05:00 Lots of people fall for these scams unfortunately.

$225 a year in the grand scheme of most businesses isn't much and can be overlooked if they don't know who their registrar is and what they should be paying.

Already had 1 customer call up to enquire why they had to pay this company as well as us.

Yes, I would go as far as to say that the majority of domain name owners have little or no understanding of how domain name registrations work, and these bogus bills can easily be assumed to be genuine . When this scam was doing the rounds about two years ago, it was amazing how many people paid the scamsters, or even their genuine registrar, in response to these bogus bills .

Domain Name Commissioner is collecting as many of them as they can to help with any kind of case they can bring against the people involved.

They'll all be turned over to them.
