475318 2006-08-02 00:41:00 Dead toddler battered by up to 60 blows

Wednesday August 2, 2006

A terrified 3-year-old boy tried to hide evidence of soiling his clothes to save himself from further attacks from his mother, a court heard yesterday.

The boy was beaten by his mother soon after he went to live with her and began fouling his pants and bed.

He was admitted to Middlemore Hospital on January 31 with life-threatening injuries. He was transferred to Starship Children's Hospital where he died the next day.

The boy's mother and her partner were yesterday committed for trial on a joint murder charge after the completion of a depositions hearing in Manukau District Court.

All three names are suppressed.

The police summary said the boy was so scared of his mother's beatings he tried to wash the faeces down the sink or throw it out the bathroom window.

On January 30 this year when his mother found he had soiled his pants again she beat him with the metal handle of a broken oar.

The attack left him with a dislocated left elbow and severe bruising and swelling to his entire body, including his genitals.

The mother then gave him a cold shower but he winced every time she passed the towel over his injuries. She put him to bed.

The next morning he had wet his bed again and his mother beat him again.

When the woman's partner arrived home from his night shift he beat the toddler with an aluminium baseball bat, police claimed.

The mother arrived home after going shopping but her son was unconscious.

She told her partner not to call an ambulance because she did not want anyone, including police, to find out.

An ambulance was called and the boy was taken to hospital where he died the next day.

Police said there were at least 50 to 60 blows to the toddler's body.

Detective Constable Roger Taylor told the hearing the woman's partner told him he had seen her assault him many times with whatever was around the house.

The accused man said he arrived home to find his partner trying to revive the 3-year-old who was on the floor. These people should go to Jail for Life without possibility of parole.

Why does this happen in New Zealand ? We have these social support services available, CYFS, plunket, charities, churches, etc.

475319 2006-08-02 00:45:00 Agreed, sentencing in NZ is a joke, you only need to watch the news to hear about violent offenders getting less time inside than some white collar crimes. Nutter (10601)
475320 2006-08-02 00:53:00 Jailing them is no answer, the mother didn't seek help beacuse she was afraid of going to jail, so it made it WORSE for the child .

Jailing only works AFTER the event not as a scare tactic . She knew what might happen to her .

I think we are looking at the 5% of individuals who fall out the bottom of society because of screwed up pasts . These people will always be here and only long term weeding out the next generation will cut the abuse out .

Basically the people we have seen int eh media recently involved with child abuse do not have the same mindset and values as the pakeha middle class .

It seems that if some Maori bash each other and kids as a cultural norm, its the culture that thas to be changed .

Interesting that the pedophiles are all pakeha . . . .

475322 2006-08-02 01:01:00 Interesting that the pedophiles are all pakeha ....Actually I heard that in some regions in New Zealand, it is the right of Maori elders to break in the girls when they turn 12. I suspect sexual abuse on children is also not reported for similar reasons, in this culture. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
475323 2006-08-02 01:12:00 I didn't say jailing was always the answer, the jails are overcrowded anyway and there is more than one form of 'sentencing' that can occur.
In the type of case the original post refers to, the problem and it's cause often occurs long before the actual abuse but the safeguards and options for people in that situation are either not present or not advertised enough so that people know they can be accessed.

I'm not sure what the correlation is between your comments that
"it seem that if some Maori bash each other and kids as a cultural norm, its the norm tha thas to be changed." and
"Interesting that the pedophiles are all pakeha ...."

I also don't think turning the issue into a racial type generalised attack is very constructive.

475324 2006-08-02 01:30:00 I also don't think turning the issue into a racial type generalised attack is very constructive.I agree. Everyone has access to alternatives and there is lot's of support available.

Jailing is not a deterrent, as she knew that. Money is not the problem as one effected household was getting $2,000 a week in benefits. The stick nor the carrot works. This is where the frustration is.

As a victim of child abuse myself; bashed around the head for making bad coffee, shot at by a slug gun by step-parents, just for fun; I actually abhor violence, so being previously abused is not the cause either.

What can be done, even the CYFS report said only more dialog, between agencies, when I think there should actually be more monitoring by agencies and new parents are monitored continually until they reach an acceptable score as good parents.

Some people may object to this intrusion into their private lives, but while we are in actual crisis, we should implement this plan and review it's effectiveness in 5 years. If it is no longer required we can then let people return to their private lives.

475325 2006-08-02 01:42:00 I think that idea in some form has merit.
I don't think that it's practical or even necessary for a variety of reasons to agency monitor every new parent in new zealand but certainly historically proven 'at risk' groups or some other useful criteria could be used including I guess parents who request help themselves, although how large that group would be I'm not sure?

475326 2006-08-02 02:04:00 Interesting that the pedophiles are all pakeha ....
Not so! Paedophiles are well represented in other societies and communities, they just regard it as fairly normal that's all, so it doesn't hit the news.

As for the "parents," words fail me. Failure to toilet train can be medical or as a result of psychological stress. No point for guessing which one had the poor kid ****ting his pants.

Both of the murdering sods should be staked out over an anthill (fire-ants by preference), but staying alive in prison for life could possibly be wors, I'm not sure how hard core crims view child murderers but they won't be heroes.

Equally culpable are the "whanau", neighbours and others who heard the kid screaming or saw the bruises and did nothing.

There are no excuses, nobody else is to blame, it is not society's fault that they are losers, and they can't blame it on their own parents either. If you were beaten as a child, you'd sure as hell not want that to happen to your own children.
