475208 2006-08-01 21:18:00 There was a display of HDTV at Farmers, Lower Hutt Queensgate Shopping Mall . Wow . I was really impressed . The detail, contrast and sharpness were fantastic . But $8k for the big LCD screen - ouch!

After drooling at the HDTV I turned around to view the regular-resolution screens . There were some huge plasmas . . . and they looked like c**p compared to HDTV .

The salesguy said that blu-ray or the other HD format would be available in a year or two, and Sky would have it next year perhaps . I did not ask how they generated the HD picture displayed in Farmers . Anyone know? Probably a player specifically made by Sony for demo purposes .

So anyhow, my dream of getting a projector or plasma or big LCD screen is put on hold . Why pay big bucks to get c**ppy resolution while HDTV is on the horizon?

475209 2006-08-01 21:30:00 You can download HD videos from the net.
I have downloaded a few that are at 1280x1024 resolution (I think or something like that) and played them back on a 30" LCD TV.
You can really tell the difference between them & a DVD (720x576)

475210 2006-08-01 22:10:00 There is lots on the net about hdtv, the summary seems to be to wait a few more years for prices to fall and quality to improve. It cheaper and easier to be just behind the technology wave, than riding on top of it :)

Even with broadband it must take a long time to download a HD video. What was your experience and how long was the playing time of the videos?

475212 2006-08-02 01:02:00 The videos are about 1/2 an hour long and are about 1GB in size.
They are either in DivX6 or WMVHD format so they have been compressed I guess from the original HD format whatever that may be... MPEG2?? MPEG4??

Oh come on now... wouldn't you like to see Toni Marsh on HD? :D
Or even Jeremy Clarkson's lovely wheels?
Or The Discovery Channel, etc?
Or the AB's in action?

475215 2006-08-02 06:06:00 I can't understand how you can be blown away by "a display of HDTV at Farmers, Lower Hutt Queensgate Shopping Mall."

There is no HDTV transmission in NZ. The TVs may be capable of HDTV but whats the point when there isn't any broadcasts using it? So all you have is the usual LCD or PLasma TVs.

Me, I'll wait for SED.

If you like what you saw, wait till you see this year's Bravia models which display full HD (1920x1080 - the current Bravia models display 720p on a 1366 x 768 display). If you want to see some HD content on your computer (assuming you monitor is big enough to actually see the extra detail) check out Apple's movie trailer site (www.apple.com) which as plenty of HD trailers. :)

The first HD-DVD players are already available and Bluray will be out by the end of the year, so I see 2007 as the year HD will really take off. Most people don't buy a new TV every three of four years like they do with computers, so future proofing is important, especially when broadcast HD will be available within the next two years (including FTA HD Prime, hopefully TVNZ and Canwest will follow suit, got to be competitive you know ;) - don't worry, I won't get my hopes up :p ).

Because the horizon you speak of is in 2012, Unless of course you wiah to outlay 10 grand to watch movie marketing downloaded from apple, in which case add another 5 grand for the required bandwidth.

I can't see DVD dying for any reason in the next few years, There will always be something bigger and better on the horizen but the market will decide, not the marketers. After all DVD was not the first new tech that blew chunks all over VHS merely the first new and better tech to be adopted in such large numbers that the video outlets were forced to stock the format.

And VHS was/is low quality crap, Even when it came out you could get better formats/tech/quality.

Of course...I could be way off, still, you can get HD projectors and make immediate use of your HD capable comp.......
