NEW YORK - "I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one person wrote. "I immediately turned the magazine face down," wrote another. "Gross," said a third.

These readers weren't complaining about a sexually explicit cover, but rather one of a baby nursing, on a wholesome parenting magazine — yet another sign that Americans are squeamish over the sight of a nursing breast, even as breast-feeding itself gains greater support from the government and medical community.

We see far more on television and in Ponsonby, come on!!!

475151 2006-08-01 19:32:00 The world is full of idiots, they're quite willing for their kiddies to watch the evening news with murder rapes and war, or the latest action offering with ppl being shot and blown up, but OH NO A BREAST HOW DISGUSTING. *** get a grip america/anyone else who has a prob with something as natural as BREASTFEEDING, your children get to see more in the playboys they nicked from under the old mans bed or in his workshop. straitjacket (9698)
475152 2006-08-01 19:50:00 As America was settled by religious fundamentalists of many persuasions are you surprised?
The US population seems to be scared of anything soft & warm that belongs to normal females. The poor b...... s, brought up on a hard glass bottle, they return to the same for comfort later.

475154 2006-08-01 21:13:00 Things seem to be disturbingly schizophrenic in America over things like this. Where the greatest smut and porn producing country in the world, is also squeemish over such minor and natural functions. netchicken (4843)
475155 2006-08-01 21:22:00 Only in ameraica will they complain about something like that and preach freedom of the press in the same breath. lazydog (148)

What i see here is that rather than attack something local, it's easier to attack something foreign . This is always much more politically safer than telling you neighbor that you don't like his/her/it's morals or politics . The response of trying to write off this weird prudishness as American hypocracy is just divion for its own sake . We have our share of people who wish to restrict others, and habitually find offense in others functionality freedoms achievements and joys .

I can't understand the shock here, all i'll say is that if someone finds that so erotic and therefore shocking to the point where they feel they have to put the magazine face down, then someone must live a very sheltered life, or at least be very easily aroused .

Most of us get out of our homes and see more booby than that on a daily basis . We're hardly going to be shocked by a side view where one can't even see any nipple, but can tell that a baby is being fed . Maybe some people are shocked by this because it's nice to see something natural? Perhaps it's the same as those who are bitter, and curse young lovers for having something they will never have? Perhaps any reminder that life can be better for others is offensive? Perhaps if there were more of these images around, people might remember what boobys are for, and then we could all just get on with it . . . . .

475157 2006-08-02 00:51:00 That does have some truth to it.
America is not the only place to have it's share of prudes, you only have to know some breastfeeding mothers in NZ to hear abou the looks/comments from people around them when feeding outside of their own homes or requests from store/shop people to not 'do that' in their establishments to realise there are people with the same attitude here.
