706210 2008-09-19 03:30:00 Hi all, have a very old pc with Nortons A/V, I didnt even know it was installed until after Avast bleated about it. I thought only AVG 6 was installed

Sounds like the same problem I had the other day. Avast would not start up, complaining that Nortons was still running even though there was no sign of it in Task Manager, Start Up or in Add/Remove Programs.

I tried the Norton removal tools, cleaning out the registry and reinstalling/uninstalling Nortons, all with no success.

In the end I very reluctantly abandoned Avast and put AVG 8 on the system instead.

Avast has happily replaced Nortons many many times in the past on different machines so it appears to be a recent issue with Avast.

If you do manage to solve it please let us know.

Hi, yeah same thing with me, totally cleaned the registry and deleted program folder, even got the removal tool running and allegedly doing the same thing I didn't, however avast still complained . . . . . however the service that wouldn't start were not required anyway . . . . P2P, outlook and something else! . . . Guess I could of removed Avast, rebooted and tried again after the system were apparently flushed of Norton . . . . so not quite as happy as i could be on this, however the PC does ran better!! . . . LOL

It was the standard shield that wouldn't start with my one . Without that there was not much point in having the AV on the system even though a couple other providers were working .

I also tried uninstalling Avast, rebooting and reinstalling . Twice . It still didn't work so I gave up .
