475731 2006-08-04 01:55:00 I have some friends who are on dial up through telecom. Never visited any sites and only used the computer for email. Had nortons but never updated afte six months their computer started doing odd things. I installed AVG free for them and scanned their 'puter. result 148 infections!!!!!!!!!!!!
They still didn't learn though, 6 months later same scenario but only 132 infections!!!!!!!!!!!!
"why would some one do that to us?" they cried.
some people are just not ready for the digital age.

475732 2006-08-04 04:21:00 I use SpyBot Search and Destroy to check for infection as well as Outpost Firewall to keep the other beggars out. I also use a-Squared as a guard against Trojans. PeterA (8057)
475733 2006-08-04 07:40:00 it looks like your useing a wide range of tools. however none actually look for virus's. a firewall may id those that try to propergate via the net and spybot may pick up the more malware type and of course the anti-trojen will find trojens but it still leaves standard virus undetected.

i general use AV and firewall as the main detection with the anti-spyware, anti-trojen as secondary.

the ISP AV is email only, which is only one methos of infection. its not that much different from desktop, in fact some uses do use the same software on desktops (sytem wide prtection instead of just email). history has show the ISP software fails from time to time so its not a good idea to rely on it. the ISP AV is really there to keep ISP costs down by reducing wasteing bandwidth sending virus emails.

Murray P......yeah you can keep knocking those pints back ;) :D

475734 2006-08-05 02:58:00 I don't run anti virus on my SuSE box... :xmouth: dolby digital (5073)
475735 2006-08-05 03:30:00 I don't run anti-virus software on my Mac, but I guess if I used Windows I would (viruses don't just travel via email so your ISP's filters won't fully protect you). :) maccrazy (6741)
475736 2006-08-05 04:40:00 Don't rely on your ISP scans. I still have a chuckle when I find email attachments on Macs that are infected - they got through the email virus scanner due to some mistakes by some sysadmins.

But all in all I don't think you are mad. You just have to understand how you get infected in the first place - I am my own first line of defense.

475737 2006-08-06 20:53:00 No anti virus on my Mac either.
The old 98 & then the XP were locked down with a heap of 'just in case' anti everything software. RIP to both.

475738 2006-08-06 23:16:00 I really hope that those who run Macs and Linux without an AV do not forward on to Windows users those joke emails that everyone gets. Especially the ones with attachments. I have had two in the last month that have been flagged as being infected. :groan: FoxyMX (5)

Any Email that does get forwarded is reduced to plain text, which is the only way i send email. I just don't see any point that out weighs the risks HTML mail carries.
