475557 2006-08-05 01:22:00 You get paid to work eight hours a day.
Useing the bosses' time for your own activities is theft.
And you are the same people who criticise piracy. What's the difference?????????Grief mate... a half hour per day personal browsing/emailing doesn't break the bank (unless the business is in dire straights anyway).

Give a little, get a little, makes for a happier work environment.

475558 2006-08-05 01:43:00 It depends on the employer's policies and the sort of work you are paid to do. If you are paid to do data entry, you don't need to use Google, or Wikipedia. Unless you are running Trademe auctions for your employer, you don't need Trademe.

I used to keep track of a couple of directly work-related newsgroups during work hours when I had time; anything else was done after 5 or 6 p.m. or in the weekends.

If you are already "Getting into trouble for using the net too much at work" using something like this is fairly sure to provoke more trouble.

475559 2006-08-05 02:05:00 Everyone needs a few breaksw throughout the day. some people go out of a smoke, some get up & walk around, and some browse the net. They are just 5 or 10 minute breaks that stop you from burning out. Greven (91)
475560 2006-08-05 02:22:00 Some employers have the attitude that you take a break in your own time. If you burn out, that's your problem. :D

The "5 or 10 minutes" add up.

Give a little, get a little, makes for a happier work environment.I'm with Jack on this one. You are not talking about spending a quick 2 minutes doing something personal here. If the staff in my dept spent 30 mins a day in work time doing personal stuff, that adds up to 60-70 hours lost productivity per week. Then add to that all the staff in the other depts. Put a $ figure on that.

Internet use during work is only for work related internet searches or emails. If you want to do some personal internet stuff, then you do it in your tea break or after hours. Very simple rule which everyone follows and if you abuse it, then you are soon pulled up as it is unfair on other staff having to carry your workload.

Does that mean if I think of work issues in my own time, work should pay me

I want the OpenOffice.org version :D

475563 2006-08-05 03:16:00 Lucky for some. We dont have access to the net or email at work  Speedy Gonzales (78)
475564 2006-08-05 04:40:00 You're just a meanie!

so a few months ago we have a good look at the proxy logs.........

by data usage.......

20% was trademe.
50% was youtube or google-video

15% other crap.

15% work related.

so we blocked youtube google-video and trademe.

total cost of providing internet is down by more than half.

Isn't everyone entitled to 2 15 minute breaks (1 morning, 1 afternoon) that hardly anyone takes? If you have a 1 hour lunch break, is that using up all your breaks for the day in 1 big lot, or are you still entitled to smoko breaks?
