475409 2006-08-02 04:33:00 If we assume that it costs $30 for basic broadband provision 256kbps (basic infrastructure cabinets, wiring, power etc), $10 for higher speeds 2-3 m/bits (better backhaul speeds, national network capacity), that leaves $10 to pay for data usage @ $2 per Gb. Seems about right to me... while a majority of other ISPs charge ~$50 for 10Gig (which by your sums would mean we pay $1 per Gb).
Someones still getting pretty rich

From the link Bruce provided... Conservative figures from Alcatel, the network manager for Telecom, show how far the incumbent is from meeting customer expectations on broadband speed. By the end of this year, Alcatel says the figure is 10Mbit/s for so-called power users, and 1Mbit/s for novices. Telecom currently has no way of reaching these modest targets, already exceeded in many OECD countries.

475410 2006-08-02 04:34:00 So, what is the possible full upload speed on standard adsl? jermsie (6820)

Haha, how long is a piece of string?

Off my exchange the full possible speed will be..............600kbps.

475412 2006-08-02 06:36:00 Taking into account the 25% overhead on current Jetstream uploads, I calculate 819.2Kbps. You won't get that, of course, because your router won't connect at 1Mbps, because you won't live across the road from the exchange. Expect 600k in perfect conditions. george12 (7)
475413 2006-08-02 08:06:00 A bit difficult to do these days as a lot of NZ sites visited have portions hosted overseas.Telecom would save themselves huge amounts of money if they rented servers in a local datacenter for an internationally competitive price. Until they do, my websites will be staying in Texas. maccrazy (6741)

And?
Traffic that travels via NZ peering exchanges should be able to be free. Which some ISPs do offer :D

475415 2006-08-02 13:14:00 Let's simply have unconstrained bandwidth and you pay per GB downloaded @ $2-3.Keep the caps!!!!!. Leechers that want unlimited capacity virtually steal speed from the rest of us. They not only should be capped, but knee-capped as well. Greg (193)
