475218 2006-08-02 09:00:00 Because the horizon you speak of is in 2012

 Sky is supposed to have HD next year or so.
And BluRay will be available way before 2012.

Right?

475219 2006-08-02 09:02:00 I can't understand how you can be blown away by "a display of HDTV at Farmers, Lower Hutt Queensgate Shopping Mall."
There is no HDTV transmission in NZ. The TVs may be capable of HDTV but whats the point when there isn't any broadcasts using it? So all you have is the usual LCD or PLasma TVs. Me, I'll wait for SED.

It was not a transmission. See Maccrazy's reply.

Believe me Pctek, what I saw was certainly not the usual big screen stuff but truly different: clear and sharp like nothing else.

Right?

Dunno about Sky, Gazing at my crystel ball I can see it getting delayed a few times, Applying to selective transmissions, and costing the earth.

I'll pass.

And Blu-ray will definitly be available in the near future, Though at what cost and in what numbers I have no idea, My prediction is that its up take will be so slow that it will be replaced before making any reasonable market share. If the players don't sell the movies will be impossible to get.

Though I reserve the right to be way off.

475221 2006-08-02 09:33:00 Yeah . What's the point buying Blu-ray or HDDVD when they can't agree on a standard? Anyone remember Betamax v VHS?
The worst case scenario won out there . It will probably come down to who can get the most movie studios & producers on board .
With my HTPC, all I will need is a DVB card .

tuner card $100-$300
installaton time ½ hour
software install ½ hour
software config forever

As for the image at Farmers; was it TV or DVD? It may be an upscaled resolution .

475222 2006-08-02 09:39:00 It can go a couple of ways.

1. The market will be indifferent and both formats will fail. (thats my position)

2. The 2 competting techs will converge, meaning players that are compatible with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (in much the same way that we now have + and - dvd compatible players. Early adaptors will of course be shafted with there $2000 players that cant play half or more of the movies available. Either way the format war will hurt the market. Have to keep these things simple if they want to sell em.

3. People will be weary of the DRM suported by MS (though both formats are saturated in this crap) and the sony sponsered format will win ( I forget which is which, It must be my indifference kicking in)

4.The market will be indifferent and both formats will fail.

475226 2006-08-02 15:34:00 You could always buy one of these (gizmodo.com) then you can watch HD content anywhere. (If you can move the thing!) CYaBro (73)

"the 20-inch Acer Aspire 9800 lets you take your HD DVD anywhere,
as long as you can lift 17.2 lbs."

Yeeeoow! That must be the heaviest laptop ever.

BTW, the comments on that web page are a hoot, especially the one by 'Worf'.
