2008-09-22 00:37:00 | I don't know why this is happening, but this problem suddenly surfaced just last night. Everytime utorrent is open the internet browsing slows down to a crawl. It's damn painful, even trademe takes a minute to load. When utorrent is closed, the speed almost immediately goes back to normal. Messenger also cannot sign in when utorrent is open. Only internet browsing speed is affected. Utorrent speeds remain the same. Is this a problem at my end or is it one of xtra's ingenious plan to lose another customer?

2008-09-22 00:56:00 | You have actually answered your own question - with utorrent open its prob seeding what ever files you have - so thats network traffic - you are uploading files which utorrent will do if its open then your internet speed will be down. Close utorrent and your speed comes back up I would suspect. | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-09-22 00:57:00 | In uTorrent settings, Try lowering the UPLOAD speed to 5k or less. | sroby (11519) | |
2008-09-22 01:01:00 | But this has never been a problem before, even if I were seeding for up to 10 peers. Sure, internet would slow down, but not anywhere near as drastic as this sudden problem. Decreasing my upload speed to 5k would limit my download speed to 20-25k.

2008-09-22 01:12:00 | I think if you limit it to 6K upload the download becomes uncapped. It might be 9K. Also, check how many connections you have able to be opened. The swarm of half opens and connections to peers and seeds causes havoc with your internet, especially if the router cannot handle them. If you are using uTorrent 1.8, go to preferences, advanced, scroll down to net.calc_operhead and change it to true, the speed graph and D/U numbers bottom right will now reflect all bandwidth being used by utorrent, if this is near 15KBs up (if you are on 128K upload plan) then that will be why your net is slowing down so much, the upload is being saturated

Thanks. What I don't understand is why this is very suddenly a problem. I've always left utorrent seeding/downloading stuff 24/7 with little or no problems at all. |

2008-09-22 01:50:00 | Could be and its only a guess that Xtra/telecom are throttling speeds with torrents ??? | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-09-22 01:59:00 | You tried restarting the router? | dirtbag (6060) | |
2008-09-22 02:01:00 | You tried restarting the router? Yep. And it would take it ages (around 5 mins) to reconnect, and even worse I can't even browse, as if it's offline, even though utorrent will start seeding/downloading.

2008-09-22 02:14:00 | If it really is taking 5 minutes to reconnect the router might be on the way out, or exchange having congestion problems | dirtbag (6060) | |
