706715 2008-09-21 03:38:00 Hi . Having trouble with my Tecra 8000 laptop, running Wn98SE .

After lots of small issues apparent, a 'free' Registry Cleaner notified 194 issues and it 'fixed' most of them . I then tried to uninstall the cleaner and the 'Run file associated to . . . ' dialogue box came up . Then it wouldn't even run '(File) Explorer', so decided to reboot it .

First time it tried and tried to get going with hard drive clearly working and ended up in blank screen . After a time I rebooted it and got the 'toshiba' screen then the Win98 screen then the AVG Boot scanner screen (all normal), then the 'Machine was not shutdown nomally etc' screen, then the Win98 screen again, then the wallpaper (no icons, then blank screen . It rebooted itself a while later, then went to blank screen .

On last occasion, got as far as desktop and wallpaper, but the vast majority of icons have the windows in their place, although they have their correct program names . IE, Outlook and 'My Computer' are OK .

Where to from here, please?

All help gratefully received .

Cheers .

706716 2008-09-21 04:10:00 Use something like ccleaner for registry entries. Some of these other free programs are crap. And if u delete valid reg entries, you may end up with a dead system Speedy Gonzales (78)
706717 2008-09-21 04:54:00 OK, assuming the worst, what should I do? I can get into safe mode. The CD drive is not present in Explorer. A Team (13613)
706718 2008-09-21 05:18:00 Hmm. The short answer - backup critical data and reinstall. merlin (256)
706719 2008-09-21 05:28:00 There's nothing that critical on it. I save it to other media (flash drive) (inaccessible at the mo).

How do I reinstall with no CD drive visible?

If you boot into DOS with the W98 boot floppy, shouldn't that give you CD-ROM support?

706721 2008-09-21 05:59:00 I'm going to try that, but have got floppy and CD-Rom, but not both at the same time! A Team (13613)
706722 2008-09-21 07:49:00 before doing a reinstall do a f8 boot choose comand line and type in "scanreg" this will allow you to restore the pc to a registry version earlier than when you ran that program if been a while but by default i think it keeps arecord of the last five versions
