706492 2008-09-20 09:47:00 A new computer with dual core cpu, 8800 gpu and 2 gigs of ram, 550 psu.

Runs perfectly with high quality graphics for about 10 minutes and then either locks up or just shuts down the program (game) he is running. Gives no warning or message. Reloading the game, runs perfectly for another 10 minutes, and then same performance.

What would you look for? I suspect something is holding memory and not releasing it. How do you check for this? And how do you cure it?

He is running Windows xp and is playing with MS Flight sim 2004.
He and his computer are in Perth and I'm tryind to help him via voice on Teamspeak.

706495 2008-09-20 10:55:00 Click start/run type in eventvwr look in the logs there may be something in there that says whats happened.

If its over heating - generally it wont restart right away until its cooled down - sometime 2-5 minutes.

Boot the pc into the bios and leave it running for 30 mins.

706497 2008-09-20 22:20:00 If after doing what apsattv said,if it doesn't lock up (or even if it does) I'd suggest you download memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/) - burn the ISO image with your Image burning software and boot from the CD running the test for at lest two full cycles.

Could be faulty memory or something else failing on the board as well, it does happen sometimes.

What you can also try is Burnin Test (http://www.passmark.com/) Its software that you load on the PC and run it through various cycles, it puts a strain on the hardware and the failing component will show ( usually) if there is a fault someplace. Its free for 30 days, but you wont need it that long.
