707700 2008-09-25 02:51:00 This morning I was mucking around with things trying to follow someone's instructions in another post about file sharing. I couldn't get that to work, but I loaded Comodo on my PC and laptop and also Avast on the laptop (already on PC). The laptop was running a scan so I left it while I went to have lunch, and when I got back, it had shut down. I plugged in the power supply and turned it on again, but just got a completely black screen. This happened twice, then for some reason it came on as normal. But I've lost my internet connection and can't seem to get it back.

On the PC it is only showing the PC and the wireless router, not the laptop as well, and on the laptop I am only able to see the laptop, not the PC or the wireless router. I can't remember how I set it up before, but it used to have "whatever family network" before and that is no longer showing. I tried setting up a wireless connection and it prompted me for the pin off the router, which I entered, but I can't seem to work out what to do next.

I was connected to the internet before and apart from running the CMD run types and trying to ping the two computers (which worked this morning but is not working now - the PC comes up with results but not the laptop, which gives me an error code of 1231) and installing the firewall and antivirus software, I haven't done anything else.

Can anyone please help me get back my internet connection on the laptop?

707701 2008-09-25 02:57:00 Comodo is blocking each device from seeing and talking to each other. You will have to go into comodo and configure your home network as an allowed address range to talk to each other...
Firewalls are supposed to block, thats what it is doing.....I am pretty sure they have detailed instructions on their web-site...

707702 2008-09-25 03:06:00 Right, tell me how to find the address (is that from the run CMD command ipconfig / all?) and what to do and I'll do it! I clicked into Comodo and saw the family network was there on the PC and the laptop, so that's good, it hasn't disappeared!

And which address do I need? There are several that come up under ethernet adapter local area connection:
Link-local IPv6 address
IPv4 address
Subnet mask
Default gateway

Also, of course when I try doing that on the laptop, it comes up with 'media disconnected' for all settings. Do I have to get the laptop to connect to the PC's network first? If so, how? I've tried looking at Comodo's site but haven't had much luck finding what I need to do.

707703 2008-09-25 03:40:00 Can ANYONE help? If I can't work out how to configure Comodo (which everyone says is great), I will have to uninstall it. I've had a look at their online help site but I am a real novice and don't want to make things worse. I can't get an address for the laptop as it is not connected, and I don't know how to get it connected as it's not 'seeing' the network. Mind you, the network name is not showing on the PC either, just in Comodo. Beemer (6956)
707704 2008-09-25 03:52:00 I've exited Comodo but the laptop still won't connect and the family network is still not appearing in the network centre. Usually when the laptop isn't connected (sometimes it doesn't do it automatically) and I click on 'connect to a network' it comes up with the family network but it is not appearing anywhere. I'm worried now that it isn't a problem with the firewall, so is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction as I am starting to get rather annoyed! Beemer (6956)
707705 2008-09-25 04:28:00 I did a system restore, got the connections back, but I still have no firewall. Any suggestions (other than Comodo, unless someone can tell me how to get it to allow my laptop to connect once I install it) would be welcomed. Beemer (6956)

Boot into safe mode. Check if EventViewer has any issues.
Resume your scans. Make sure you have no malware.

Then go check if the NIC is working.

707707 2008-09-25 04:35:00 Hi Beemer, still nutting away with the firewall?...
ahhh, so where are you at...you will have to give me a few details, i cant be bothered typing out every possible setup and my typing sucks.....
Desktop PC - O/S, firewall?, network workgroup name, if Vista, check the type of network its set for, ie: public, private etc.
Same info required for laptop......

707708 2008-09-25 04:39:00 Thanks guys, as mentioned, did a system restore and all connections are active again. Have not installed Comodo again, so currently have no firewall.

pctek - thanks, but I have no idea (apart from booting in safe mode) what all that means - especially the NIC part!

SolMiester - not 100% sure what you need. On PC network is set for public, it is Vista (on both machines), network workgroup name - is that Desktop? Or (our name) family network?

If Vista network set for public, it will not share its files or let you see it, you have to change Vista to private network. As for firewalls, I dont bother, however, I used to use comodo but got frustrated having to repeat allow instructions when the damn thing would keep them or when a/v updates changed the exe.......

Both pc's need to be on same workgroup, access from computer name in system in control panel, create shared folders in each, away you go!
