707651 2008-09-25 00:53:00 I just bought an external USB HDD case, which after a lot of confusion works (didn't read the little notice that says "Make sure your drive is set to MASTER")

Then I put this 200MB drive in it (easier than plugging it into actual IDE port) but while device manager shows up the USB to IDE and the hard drive itself, it cannot be viewed.

Doesn't show up in My Computer or Disk manager. It DOES show up in Everest as a 2048MB drive though... (which it isn't)

I know that some controllers are too old to handle larger drives, but it sounds like this can't handle anything lower than 2GB! First time I've ever heard of that one...

707652 2008-09-25 01:05:00 2GB? 200MB? Maybe the drive's too old? wratterus (105)

That's what I reckon... The drive is too small for the USB to IDE controller

Sounds weird though, I can connect even say 80MB drives to my PC through IDE directly and they work fine

Yes

You havent got another USB drive taking its allocated drive letter have you?

No, it was the only USB drive connected at the time

707657 2008-09-25 05:05:00 Is a network drive taking it's letter?? jwil1 (65)
707658 2008-09-25 05:18:00 jwil1, thats what i meant....my USB drive usually asks for e or g, but if another mapping has taken it, it wont show! SolMiester (139)
707659 2008-09-25 06:49:00 Why then would the drive be wrongly identified as 2048MB by Everest? (which strangely enough is a rather perfectly round number)

I don't think it's a drive letter issue. I think it's a capacity issue
