707125 2008-09-23 05:18:00 Hi
My computer was working fine till the other day when I removed the second hdd to test another hdd. Once done I put my hdd back in as it was but now I'm having problems booting. I get the error message to this effect:
Primary master: DVD ROM
Secondary master: CD ROM
Primary slave: Not found
Secondary slave: my secondary ide hdd (80 GB)
It also says no floppy found. I am given the option to press F1 to continue in which case computer starts or to press DEL and enter SETUP.
My main hdd is a SATA 120 GB hdd.
I have Windows XP home with DVD ROM, CD ROM, floppy and 2 hdds as explained.
What should I do to fix this problem and correct the primary/secondary master/slave setttings?
Thanks
Paul

707126 2008-09-23 05:27:00 Hi Paul, sounds like at 1 stage in the pc's life, while having 2 drives, the c: drive was formatted while the 2nd was not, when new o/s installed, the boot.ini gets written to the 2nd drive so you can keep your drive letter mappings.
When you removed the 2nd drive, the boot.ini went with it.
When you replaced the drive back in, i imagine you have not connected the cable correctly or when you placed the test drive in, it changed the BIOS to read a new disk other than your 2nd drive.

So, the 2nd drive is IDE?, is that seen?, I think you just need to set the BIOS to boot from SATA instead of IDE.......

Thanks. Yes, second drive is IDE.
I have checked the boot sequence - this is correct as 1) SATA hard drive; 2) CD-ROM and 3) Floppy.
However, when the computer starts it is still showing the error:
"Primary master: DVD ROM
Secondary master: CD ROM
Primary slave: Not found
Secondary slave: none
It also says no floppy found." (or words to that effect).
What now? Do I need to somehow reset the pimary/secondary master/slave settings?
Thanks
Paul

707128 2008-09-24 10:03:00 If theres nothing on primary / secondary slave, then put both on None

If both cds are on master (primary and secondary master)

If you've got a floppy, enable it in the BIOS, if not disable it

Check the jumpers or check that the power hasnt come out of the slave hdd

707129 2008-09-25 22:40:00 Sorry but I don't really understand this nor how to fix it.
At the moment I get the message;
Primary Master is my DVD ROM
Primary Slave is my CD ROM
Secondary Master is None
No entry for Secondary Slave.
Floppy not found.
Are these the right connections for Primary Master and Slave?
What should be on the Secondary Master/Slave setttings?
Thanks

707130 2008-09-25 23:42:00 Depends where you've connected the devices.

If theyre on Primary only then it'll say None on secondary or vice-versa

If if you've got a floppy enable it in the BIOS

And change the bootdisk in the BIOS to the one thats got windows on it. Then save / reboot
