707006 2008-09-22 20:34:00 At the moment i have a fileserver with 6 harddrives, AthlonXP 1.6ghz, 1GB ram powered by a 400W PSU.
I plan to expand the fileserver to 13 harddrives over time was wondering if i need to upgrade my psu

for the upgrade ill be using 2 of the 4port version of this
www.trademe.co.nz
and 2 of these
www.cbcnz.com

obviously ill be using whatever harddrives are best value at the time, buying new ones as they fill up.

also are there any more rugged sata power cables i coud get, so far ive had 2 standard ones break on me. the connectors sucks.

Why do you need 13 drives? Why not less, and a bigger size each?
Yes, you will probably need to upgrade the PSU.

You should also check how many sata and molex connectors it has, it might not have enough if you really intend to have 13 drives.

And if its a server I would be concentrating on the most reliable drives, not price as the main criteria.
Likewise with all the hardware in it.

Hell, I do even for basic internet boxes............

707008 2008-09-23 21:40:00 one of the 13 drives is an OS drive, which is currently a 40gig IDE drive and will be until said drive fails, the other 12 drives, of which i only have 4 thus far, are whatever is best value at the time, right now my server consists of a 320gig, 500gig and 2 750gig harddrives. the next few harddrives will be 1TB drives until the price of 1.5TB drives reach a point where it doesnt cost much more per gig than a 1TB drive.

its not like im filling my server with 500gig drives.

when my server is full, i plan to start swapping out the smallest drives.

Also, i would like to clarify, the fileserver is essentially a glorified external harddrive, no web access etc other than RDP

rugged sata power connectors would be nice

707009 2008-09-23 22:38:00 The cables that came with my Gigabyte board seen a lot better than ones I have had in the past. They lock onto the board and you have to squeeze the end to release them from the Mboard.

What is it your putting on them that you need so much storage? porn, warez, DV or is it a business?

As far as SATA controllers go you can get them with more than 2 ports.

And a decent size case that can hold that many drives. I think mine has space for about 10 maybe more. I have 8 in it at the moment for DV and clients work and backup, my smallest drive now is 250Gb.

Of mine I have some old IDE drives which I switch out as needed for backup using Removable Rack & Trays from DSE

707010 2008-09-25 03:51:00 yeah, i have a few gigabyte data cables, but what i want is powercables, the ones on my PSU are standard thus **** and the ones on my Y adapters are just as bad.

As for what im storing, its mostly warez - 275gig of live action tv, 245gig of animated tv including anime, 217gig of movies, 167gig of music, 163gig of ISOs, 135gig of porn, 66gig of psp csos, 30gig of music videos, 13.5gig of books, and smaller ammounts of various other things.

right now im looking at aquiring 150gig of anime and 157gig of movies, 120gig of music and 130gig of music videos

its a modest 1.2TB collection of stuff which as you can see i wish to expand to 1.9TB which is just shy of the 2.1TB i currently have.
So i like to keep ahead so i can fit all my content on one drive, say all my movies on one drive, all my music on one drive, all my tv shows on another, and all the small stuff on another. eventually im going to split the animated and live action on to seperate drives which will be the harddrive after the next i buy, since one of the 750gig drives im currently borrowing- flatmate tossed it in my server and is moving out at the end of next month.

i almost died when i saw the price of the sata controller you linked to lol.
what i like about the 4port sata controller i linked to is that its less than $80 and from what ive seen (ive owned one for almost 2 years now) they are really reliable. i just wish i coudl find a retail store that sells them.

the Removable Rack & Trays seemed pretty cool, are they hotswapable?
id be really keen on getting one for my server but sadly once i finish upgrading it so i can actually hold 13 drive there wont be any spare 5.25" drive bays .
