706961 2008-09-22 08:38:00 Is video RAM independent from the main system RAM? For example, if the video is having DDR3 RAM, can it be use in a motherboard using DDR2 RAM?

Cheers?

And no, I dont think you cant use it the other way

706963 2008-09-22 08:44:00 All onboard video uses the system RAM, all video cards can use the system RAM when needed, lower-end cards more so than high-end usually.

All video cards can use the system RAM when needed, but system RAM cannot use the video RAM.

Am I right to interpret that I can use a video card with DDR3 RAM in a mainboard using DDR2 RAM?

As long as the mainboard has whatever slot the card needs (PCI-E or AGP), then yes.

Its a totally separate thing. Graphics cards are up to DDR5 now, system RAM lags behind at the newest being DDR3.

The RAM on a graphics card has nothing at all to do with what the motherboard takes.

:thanks for enlightening me further, pctek. :)

706969 2008-09-23 02:12:00 I have 4 gigs ddr3 1600 ram
my vid card has 1gig ddr3 ram.

My system only recognises 2.7 gigs system ram.

I have been told win xp recognises only 3.7 gigs ram.
I have also been told that this 3.7 includes video ram. Which I doubt

Any comments?

If it's on a dedicated video card yes, and it can't be removed either - unless you've got a really really old (E)ISA/VLB etc or some PCI video cards... And even then it wouldn't be in a form suitable for motherboard use

If the Graphics is integrated into the motherboard chipset, then it will 99% likely to be using shared memory (it just allocates some of the sysytem memory for itself) although there are some motherboards which have integrated video and also give that it's own memory chips which are on the motherboard too.

There are also some new video cards eg: the nvidia 6200 turbocache edition which not only have their own memory on the card, they can also borrow use of some of the system memory as well, so they use a mixture of both
