706971 2008-09-23 03:17:00 My system only recognises 2.7 gigs system ram.

I have been told win xp recognises only 3.7 gigs ram.
I have also been told that this 3.7 includes video ram. Which I doubt

Any comments?

the “4GB” maximum memory limit of 32-bit Windows is purely theoretical. In practice, the max memory is something significantly less, equal to 4GB minus your video card memory and the address space allocated to a couple other hardware resourcse. Typically, the realistic maximum memory is somewhere betwee 2.5GB and 3.5GB.

And I suggest you go buy yourself a 64bit O/S. Sooner or later you'll have to, why not use your nice 4gb? Doesn't have to be Vista, 64bit comes in XP too............

As regards 64bit OS, is there any software compatibility issues, like Office 2007, etc.? All application software have to be 64bit, too?

I have a nice new xp 64 SP 3 disk sitting here on my desk. BUT I wasted a week trying to install it. It just refused to install. And I had deep formatted my hard disk first. Firstly it did not show the introductory bits. And on the odd occasion it jumped into the install section it just locked up. I even left it trying overnight. So I gave up on 64 bit.
