2008-09-23 11:05:00 | Dear all, The LCD screen of my laptop has stopped working. It doesn't even show the BIOS screen when it boots, let alone anything. The only thing that shows is the white backlight (i.e. the feature that differentiates between an unpowered screen and a powered screen that is not showing anything), but soon that disappears when it reaches the Windows login screen. I have tried a hard system reboot by removing the battery pack and replugging in, but to no avail. I do know the screen co powered and switched on. The system is fine (I can log in to the Windows), except for the screen. I have tried plugging an external monitor to the VGA port, but the monitor shows nothing as well (it doesn't show "Check Signal", but remains in sleep / standby mode). I am guessing this is a hardware problem. My ASUS has two years global warranty, so I am hoping DSE can do something about it. My friend has also made the point that the graphics card could have been soldered onto the motherboard, so any replacement would be close to impossible ASUS Z92T nVidia 7600, DSE no longer sells them. Cheers :) You haven't dropped it have you? Sounds like the LCD layer has failed, or a loose connection somewhere in the screen, or a video card fault. Not something you can fix. The most liekly reason the external monitor isn't working, is becuase you haven;t enabled it in the display properties. If you previously have enabled it, then it could be a video card. If you haven't enabled it then I would guess it was a lcd fault.

Cheers :) |

2008-09-26 05:48:00 | Jen: On average how long did it take them to get back to you?The first time they had it for 7 working days (so much for the 3 day turn-around) and then the next two times they fixed it while I waited (exchanged the AC adapter and replaced the DVD drive) . I had to phone and nag them several times the first time it was in the repair shop as they never called me with any updates . Did they give you any indication on how long it would be?

2008-09-26 10:38:00 | Nope, I haven't phoned them up yet. I intend to pop over to the centre with my laptop on Monday and see what they have got to say first. Do they provide support for backing up your hard drive while the laptop is being repaired? At the moment my main concern is the important documents and files that I haven't backed up. Initially I managed to find the folders that I want and copy them over to my portable drives, but for some folders I can't *seem* to be able to locate them. Cheers :)

2008-09-26 10:55:00 | Not sure. I think the service contract I signed said they take no responsibility for lost data (pretty standard comment). I was asked had I backed up my stuff the first time because it looked like Windows was going to be wiped. I would just tell them you haven't been able to back up your stuff because of the lack of display.

2008-09-26 10:57:00 | Hmmm, okay. If let's say I provide them a portable hard drive, would they be able to pop out the laptop's hard drive and transfer all the data to my external drive? Even at a cost? | Renmoo (66) | |
2008-09-26 11:01:00 | I don't know how they work. I did get to know one Tech well after going in three times - I'm sure I saw him cringe when he spotted me in reception with the laptop for the third time in as many weeks. :D Just take the laptop in and see what they say. They most likely won't need to reformat as it is only your screen that is playing up.

2008-09-26 11:03:00 | Yep, but at the same time I can't live without my important documents while it is being repaired. (Graphics card is the issue, and I think it will take quite some time to fix that). I will ask if they can mirror the contents onto another hard drive anyway if I can provide them a portable drive. Cheers :)
