477840 2006-08-13 04:50:00 This is what I read:

What now makes the situation very much worse is that with the increasingly stringent exhaust emission regulations, the fuels and catalyst systems on cars, both petrol and diesel, are damaged by only small amounts of the incorrect fuel. It used to be common enough to put a little petrol into diesel to help the engine start in cold weather – but with modern diesels that use extremely high injection pressures the viscosity of the fuel is critical. Any petrol present can cause scarring of the pump elements, and the seals can be damaged by compounds found in petrol. The combustion efficiency of an engine designed for petrol will be very poor if it’s fed diesel fuel, and the resulting unburned fuel passing through to the exhaust can cause the catalyst to overheat.

477841 2006-08-13 07:07:00 If youse guys have cats on diesels . . . then you are light years ahead of California, which is the leader in emissions control for the US and for the world .

I didn't know that there were field tests or betas of cats for diesels yet .

Congratulations on "beyond cutting edge and the realm of hydrocarbonous scientific discovery" We shall be watching field reports on the efficacy of diesel catalytic convertors . :D

Like I said . . . the olde fashioned Roosa-Master pumps did not like less oil in their fuel . They are pretty much all gone now in diesel injection systems . A few stationary or macerator engines for sewage pumps and small generators may still have them out there somewhere . . . but they are a dying breed . . . if not already dead and buried .

Again . . . keep my informed of cats on diesels that you have there . . . I want to know how they work . We only have particulate filters here . . . . . . our petro-scientists are too stupid to get a cat to work on a diesel so far .

477842 2006-08-13 07:30:00 i thoink pctek was talking about cats on petrol motors. however afaik later gen diesels are coming out with cats. my nissan ute is ment to have a 2 way cat (petrols are 3 way). personally i would rip it out except its still under warranty.

the comman rail are ment to be touchy with fuel quality, tho i still don't think it would do any damage. after all petrol stations are known to get petrol in the diesel tanks from time to time (notto mention adding methanol or additives to control water.

477843 2006-08-13 17:10:00 Methanol in diesel?

The CARB (California Air Resourses Board) fuel that was tried here a few years ago ruined many hundreds if not thousands of injectors and pumps . . . . all of which the state had to reimburse for repairs and replacements .

Alcohol is basically water . . . and the molecules are too big to go thru the injectors and pumps anyway . Steam from the water content also erode the seats of the nozzles and produce some really nasty acids that eat away at the less-noble metals in the systems .

477844 2006-08-13 23:03:00 i think the idea was for the methonal to soak up the water that was leaking into the tanks :( tweak'e (69)
