707469 2008-09-24 04:28:00 Hey i was using my external hard disk today at tech watching a movie. I logged off and took out the cable and power, went to another room and plugged it in and it installed the drivers and everything said that it was successful. Auto play didn't run and i went into computer from start menu and it didn't show my HDD! :horrified

Please help me out here i have 400GB worth of data on it. More importantly my dad put his backups on it to free up space on his laptop and now it was the only one he had of it.

By the way its an external Hard drive 500GB.

When i get home today i will give you specifics of the HDD as i need a screw driver to open up the case and see the model.

I went into device manager and it shows an "unknown disk" which is not initialized. I right clicked and clicked on initialize but it gave me an error message.

707470 2008-09-24 04:49:00 You tried it on more than one PC?
When you get home if it doesn't see it, try it with the actual drive connected directly to the PC without the enclosure.

707471 2008-09-24 04:53:00 What was that error message? pcuser42 (130)
707472 2008-09-24 05:50:00 Are you sure its just not a driver/removable disk issue? Sometimes when I plug in a removable drive, it appears as an unknown device. I need to unplug it and try it again, or try different ports and sometimes it works. utopian201 (6245)

Tried every port dude thanks anyways lol. ummm the error message was (this is from computer manager --> disk management in administrative tools) this is what it shows.

This one shows the unknown disk (sorry for small images any bigger and it would be very unreadable) :(

This one shows the error (the device is not ready)

And yes ive tried everything stated except for removing from enclosure and directly plugging in. will try it soon

707474 2008-09-24 07:48:00 Has this Vista PC got SP1 installed - there are known problems with some external drives not being recognized by Vista.

Ether upgrade and install SP1 or you can also try this here (www.microsoft.com)

Also try another USB device, doesn't matter, see if it reads OK.

707475 2008-09-24 08:02:00 Are you sure the eSATA controller (if it is a eSATA HDD) is enabled in the BIOS?
If it is USB HDD, are the ports functional/enabled?

707476 2008-09-24 09:05:00 Yup ports are enabled and working and yea i installed SP1 ages ago. Well i can safely remove hardware from the notification area. It recognizes that the HDD is plugged in but it just doesn't show it in my computer. I have never experienced this problem before its really weird. benj27 (14121)
707477 2008-09-24 09:18:00 Go to event viewer, and look for the error. Double click on it to see if it gives you a link

Does the BIOS see it
