1429417 2016-12-04 20:05:00 In hammering down the nails before sanding I have got a bit carried away and they are down about 3mms. Should i put filler in or just let the paint fill it up ? Misty (368)
1429418 2016-12-04 20:36:00 Depends on the look you want. If you want a smooth finish then fill. Paint will dry slowly and I would think that when dry, in time will pop up and still leave holes. Otherwise just leave as is. Bryan (147)

I agree, we have extensive kwila decking and the nail-heads pop up, mainly in foot traffic areas, but also in areas where the sun & rain 'work' the wood.
All nails were galvanised and extra-length, but they still raised their heads!

In the heaviest traffic area (board-walk to front door) I had to add a Buildex size 8 needlepoint 10 x 50mm square drive exterior grade counter-sunk wood screw between the nails to hold the darned stuff down, the rest get a bash on the head with a nail punch every few years, but I can see the day coming when all will need screws.

1429421 2016-12-05 02:18:00 Many thanks guys - that certainly answers the question ! :-) Misty (368)
1429422 2016-12-05 03:12:00 Can youse guys get epoxy coated nails?

The epoxy gets heated when you drive them in and the tend to never raise their little flat heads again.

1429423 2016-12-05 05:56:00 Decking especially hardwood decking should never be nailed, all of the suppliers state it should be screwed down. gary67 (56)
1429424 2016-12-05 06:10:00 Who can afford a hardwood deck without easy access to a 9mm and a ski mask?

My decks are all redwood and I have to refinish them yearly or they get all cracked and swaybacked.

Hardwood like oak or lignum vitae would be nice but I'd need to gross national product of Upsidedown Land to afford it.

1429425 2016-12-05 06:17:00 Nah main timbers here for decking are Kwila and Garapa I sell loads of both gary67 (56)
1429426 2016-12-05 06:47:00 And regular old pine decking? My unpainted pine deck is 20 years old and nailed down, still perfectly fine with only the occasional need to tap a few nails down. I'm perfectly happy with that. dugimodo (138)
