1431464 2017-02-02 05:24:00 Sorry didn't check earlier, DVI and HDMI is essential the same at least the video part of it so you can easily use them interchangeably with the right cable or adapters.
The adapter you ordered should be fine as well though. Looks like you're making progress :)

Yes, certainly have made progress - thanks to PF1. Some of the HDMI > VGA adapters were less than $6 NZ but I was not convinced that they would carry audio even though it stated as such, so I opted for one that was about $14 that clearly had audio. I may not need audio on the second monitor but it will be good to have it there for the future.

The difficult problem with the USB WiFi adapter was getting into the router - had to ring Slingshot tech desk to get the correct log in and password as it was different from that printed on the router. Speedy did a few other things at a speedy pace which I did not follow; there is no way I could have done it on my own even by googling for answers (which I tried).

For the curious, here is a pic to show how I will use a second screen - to monitor radio signals 7842
Putting a second monitor on my desk requires a wireless connection to the printer that needs to be shifted to another part of the room, necessitating the USB WIFI adapter.

All good now. Thanks again.

1431466 2017-02-06 19:09:00 UPDATE: Speedtest shows that with the USB WIFI speeds are 25 Mbs down :( and 8 up . With a direct connection, cable to router, speeds are 95 down  and 25 up . Fibre .

Usually having the slower speeds is not a problem but it would be nice to have it faster to take advantage of our fibre connection .

The USB WIFI is rated at 150 Mbs . I see others on eBay rated at 300 Mbs . What is the real world, actual speeds that people get with USB WIFI adapters?

1431467 2017-02-06 21:10:00 With my 300Mbps usb adapter (TP link with dual aerials) I get around 75Mbps through 3 walls and about 8M distance. That's with file transfers haven't done a speed test through it.
However with my phone using 5Ghz wireless N I get 82/22 on speedtest which is pretty good. It's also the only device I have that will work properly on 5Ghz so it has the frequency all to itself.
My AIO PC also does 5Ghz but due to distance it's not stable and I stick with 2.4

Not all adapters are created equal of course, a couple of different cheap compact 150 Mbps adapters I tried were basically unusable in my bedroom, too slow for streaming. That's why I got the larger dual aerial 300 Mbps version but now the AIO PC I use in there manages just fine with inbuilt wi-fi. 4 different adapters, all wireless N, all at the same location, 4 wildly different results. A proper external aerial definitely helps for longer range.
