1430816 2017-01-19 23:48:00 My Vista did it's last windowsupdate 03.Jul.2016 and now just hangs and never finds anymore and I have tried numerous suggestions online to try to reset update etc but alas nothing works.....

Anybody have a method that actually works ? Speedy or Wainutech in particular or anybody else have suggestions..

All help or comments appreciated and is there way to force it to reset ?

Don't really want to re-build etc.....only a backup but want to keep it going.....

1430817 2017-01-20 00:19:00 Win7 sometimes has the same issue
catch 22: MS changed the way winupdates now download , you need certain windows updates to get that newer updater

start here
answers.microsoft.com

seen if theres a winupdate client update for vista (not sure of the correct name of it)

you could allways try renaming the softwaredistribution folder (google how to do it) : sometimes works, I dont think it will in this case
Also changing dns to 8.8.8.8 also used to work in the past , for a particular update issue

1430819 2017-01-20 06:04:00 Why would anyone want to update Vista? If its still working just keep your AV up to date, and keep a backup. mzee (3324)

Vista only has three months to go before the updates stop anyway. May as well keep going until then :)

1430823 2017-02-01 17:37:00 Given up fiddling and wondering if HP Pavilion a6540a will run Windows 7 Pro 64 bit ??

Looking at the web it appears so but would appreciate comments/advice if you agree it will run this OS...

I will do a clean install as I don't want any crap coming across from Vista Home 32bit that is currently has etc...

Appreciate soonest advice/comments....especially Speedy or Wainuitech please....

1430824 2017-02-01 18:17:00 You'll have to do a clean install if you upgrade from 32 to 64 bit. You cant upgrade from 32 to 64 bit

You'll have to see if Win7 works on it, There are no drivers for any other OS besides Vista on the HP site

Doesnt mean it wont work tho. The other ASUS desktop here, doesnt have Win10 drivers on the ASUS site. But it works fine. Win10 installed the LAN, and audio

Only thing is, you cant install 32 bit drivers in 64 bit Windows. So you have to make sure whatever you have, has 64 bit drivers. Otherwise it wont work

It may pay (if the BIOS isnt up to date) to update it first.
