| 708312 | 2008-09-28 08:28:00 | Hi all, I was about to format my XP laptop's HD when I found it wouldn't boot from CD. I thought "this is strange", so took the CD and drive out - works fine in another PC. Tested other bootable discs in the same drive - no go. Boot order settings are correct. I haven't used the drive for a while given it's mainly on a network. So, I've come to the conclusion that my laptop's DVD drive has bitten the dust. I looked up replacement drives - but as this is a "middle aged" (4 years) laptop there weren't any from NZ shops. I have an old IDE DVD-ROM drive that I'm planning to replace it with (in an external case). What is a well-priced external case (only really needs to be used once - to reinstall XP)? Edit: How easy is it to whack apart a cheap 3.5" case and just use the adaptor part?? TIA |

Assuming you're referring to a 3.5" HDD case, it should work, just another IDE device after all, havent tried it though, maybe someone else has? You could also try one of those cleaning disks with the brush attached, maybe is just a dusty laser ;). |
