478640 2006-08-15 07:48:00 Well this is the off topic area so i thought I'd ask here especially as I know there are a few genealogists out there

What is a good friendly NZ genealogy forum, i have seen a couple and half of them seem dead and the other seem a little intimidating

Also is there any way to see WW1 service records, wills etc without either having to go to wellington or pay archives $25 for a copy (I want too many archives!!)

Thanks in advance

478641 2006-08-15 08:31:00 I found roots (www.roots.com???)pretty good, I think it is more interesting when going on the forums there and actually getting in touch with distant relatives. Another good site I found that is good for tracking people was oldfriends.co.nz

Edit: www.rootsweb.com

Go to Goggle and type in "commonwealth war graves commisssion", U will find a link that will let U search all commonwealth deaths during all wars, (Air, Navy and Army).

From memory, cost nothing to download the details.

Try the Mormon Church in Invercargill. Also on the Internet. They will have genealogy but not War Graves. Is it only NZ you want to research? PJ

Hi Poppa John

I have looked at the family search site (the Mormon one), but it only has my Great Grandfather and the details are wrong (country of birth), do they have more data at the actual church, or is it the same as the websites

As for the war graves/records stuff I have found my great great Uncles entry on the Cenotaph (www.aucklandmuseum.com) website as well as the CWGC site and the Great War forum (1914-1918.invisionzone.com) has provided me with heaps of detail about his service

I am also interested In Australia as My family were in NSW Wales in the 1890s and before that Queensland, but i haven't got any further back, (I am a cheapskate i could buy the Marriage cert from the Queensland BDm which would help, but i have set myself a $20 a month budget, (3 step kids and one on the way, i need to budget), and i am probably way over that now)

I have also been told the Family are from Scotland originally (makes sense from the spelling of Thomson), but until i get my A into G and find out more about the queensland connection i can't get back to Scotland

So any help would be appreciated

Thanks

478646 2006-08-17 02:26:00 Nigel, I did an Australian search many moons ago & remember finding a good website.
After I found my relative (by fluke) another way, I promptly forgot it. But if I get time tonight, I'll see if I can dredge it up again.

Genealogy can indeed be a fascinating detective story. I've spent/wasted untold hours looking at websites which promised much & delivered nothing - then found a tiny gem which encouraged me to keep going.

And on the subject of National Archives - a young relative in Wgtn who had only a passing interest for a school assignment yonks ago said she'd found a reference to my Danish great-grandfather's immigration record.
So I went there in April & much to my delight found a file which not only had several official letters, but a reference from a local minister which told me things I'd never known about him.

(The old boy had lost his Naturalisation Certificate issed decades earlier, but required to prove he was entitled to an Old Age Pension. And officialdom was even worse then than now. He had to provide a lot of stuff... and that was my gain. It was definitely worth the visit. Even the bored youngies got intrigued...)

The LDS Research Centre will have Microfiche of NZ BDM's Go & talk to the staff there They will be very friendly & helpful. I did all my research in Manurewa, Auckland & found that the Senior lady there was a very very distant relative from the early 1800s. I always called her 'My Cousin in Law 6 times removed'. PJ
