479227 2006-08-19 05:19:00 In CHCH MEK is commonly used in industrial printers in the cable industry for printing onto pvc.

The company that serviced these printers was Image. Not sure if they have an Auckland branch, but it's something you can look into.

ps. never store a litre of MEK in a high voltage spark tester...the OSH bods get cranky. :D

479228 2006-08-19 09:35:00 I don't know how pure you require your MEK but some of the liquid glues used to assemble plastic kits have a high MEK content. So you could try your local hobby shop. Be very careful when using pure MEK it is a pretty nasty chemical which can seriously damage your health. tutaenui (1724)

Pretty much 100% pure, it has to be placed in other solutions in tiny but measured quantities and it must not add additional contaminants. If I started with 1cc of the stuff, I'd still have .99 of a cc when I finished, apart from any minor evaporation or "shrinkage".

I'll do the rounds of the local printers.

Cheers

479230 2006-08-19 14:28:00 if you want pure a print shop or ink supplier will have it, and I;m sure they will give you a small quanity without worry as it is not used in the making of illegal substances. ISO is a different story plod (107)
479231 2006-08-20 06:39:00 MEK is used in the production of cocaine and other drugs, its a PCP (Precursor Product). But 1 cc would not get you far.

It is also the hardener for some fibreglass resins.

I do not speak from experience, but from an "expert witness" basis where I have had the evidence available for drug trials, which was clearly labelled MEK....

479234 2006-08-20 13:30:00 I was so excited at the beginning when I see the word "methyl-ethyl-ketone", thinking that this thread was about some chemistry problem.

Sorry for contributing unhelpful post to this thread, Billy T.

Cheers :)

Same here, but I know Alloy Yachts uses ALOT of MEK, possibly for cleaning....

I'll ask my mate who works there if he could nick some if you're interested.

They also have various systems in place to ensure no welding/grinding/other work goes on whilst MEK is in use :D

479236 2006-08-21 03:02:00 The epoxy hardener is usually MEK peroxide, "MEKP" not MEK. (It's a strong oxidiser, and causes the heating which is needed for the cure). MEK is often used to clean surfaces or the equipment used to deliver epoxy mixes. Graham L (2)
