478448 2006-08-14 12:22:00 In the mid 70's I had a Z1 900 Kawasaki and travelled over the Rimutuka hill to Wellington a lot. It amazed me how many dickheads would try to stop me from passing. None succeeded mikebartnz (21)
478449 2006-08-14 19:39:00 After a rugby injury to my back I spent quite a while in a hospital orthopaedic ward. There were about a dozen of us in the ward. Guess why almost all of the others of the injured were there. Motorbike accidents. Greg (193)
478450 2006-08-14 23:52:00 My previous job, I worked with a group of Trumpy riders. I also saw the results as one ended up in hospital because some dipshyt pulled out in front of him from a sideroad (100kmph zone). I also used to listen to them on Monday morning at work as they talked about the ride they had on the weekend and how they just about got hit coz someone wasn't checking their mirrors etc and cut them off.
I know these guys weren't angels, but since then I have been more alert around bikes. If I see one in the rearview, I generally move slightly left for him/her to get past. When you pull off a side road onto a main road, you generally know how much space you require to merge into traffic safely. With bikes I now allow twice that distance (i.e. if I'm the one pulling into the main flow of traffic).
But thats just me. I see others try to cut them off. I do hope when they sucessfully cut someone off, they hang around to clean up their mess. They won't though; unfortunately

478451 2006-08-15 01:24:00 I'm quite sure the car drivers would be a lot more considerate of two wheelers if they realised just how much damage the bike (even a pedal bike) can do to their car.

The bike rider will always be hurt a lot more than the car driver in a crash, but modern cars bend very expensively very easily.

Now if you had that Z1 900 now and it was in immaculate condition :stare:

I let them through . One bike on the road is one less car on the road and you can get 5 bikes into one carpark (give or take a Harley or two) . Came out of work this morning a there was a Suzuki 1300, black . . . . nnniiiicccceee :waughh:

Of course you will always get one or two plonkers on the highway .

yes, i'd agree. i dont think the individuals who open doors/cut bikers off realize the damage they are also likely to do to the rider.

and for the record: a silver car tried to outrun my bike to get a gap infront of me while i thought after all the rvving the accupants were after a race, after being beaten the driver decided to tailgate dangerously close. when the gap infront closed to 3m and behind was still about 30cm i pulled over (why pass when your're doing the speed limit?). the car continued to tailgate the next car. when the traffic stopped i went to pass the silver car. luckily i saw the doors on both sides open a crack and passed well in the median. they did infact open their doors. i was prepared to go back and make a nice job of their paint/bodywork/face when i realized the four occupants of the car were both samoan and MUCH larger than me.

i guess that's why the guys at the go-karting place on the concourse reckon the best drivers (that dont normally race karts) they have (that dont normally race karts) are bikers, because bikers know their surroundings. and if they dont, they get hurt and natural selection takes place lol

478457 2006-08-16 06:06:00 I have been lucky so far, as I have not encountered any idiots purposely trying to cut me off when I'm riding. But I hardly ever travel between lanes (motorway or lights), as I live in the country (Waiuku), and dont go into Auckland that much.

Also, because I ride a cruiser, it is just that bit wider and makes driving between cars quite difficult.

Had a few scares though, when ppl just dont look properly before pulling out.
