707783 2008-09-25 21:00:00 Looking at a card to mainly run HDTV. Was recommended 8600GT as one of the better cards to handle H264 but am not able to get the card I want(without fan). An EN 9400GT has been suggested as a substitute. Is the 9400GT as good (or better) than the 8600GT ?? Or is there a better alternative (in that price range)?

Not into gaming (ducks down and pulls head in)

707784 2008-09-25 21:58:00 Supposedly the 9400GT is equivalent to the 8500 not the 8600.
So get the 8600 then.

What I was after was a 'silent' 8600GT but if I can't get that what would an equivalent in the 'silent' range.
As a last resort I could go with an 8600 with a fan but I was trying to keep the noise down.

these cards have been reported to have overheating problems if the case has insufficient airflow.

Also consider the 9500GT which is basically the replacement for the 8600Gt and marginally faster.

If all you are trying to do is watch HD content an 8500GT or 9400GT may be fine - I personally use an 8500GT to watch freeview and it works very well - cpu load averages 5-8 % on an AMD X2 3800+ with no dropped frames and a very nice picture

707787 2008-09-26 23:23:00 I am using one of these Asus en8600gt silent cards in a stock standard Mid tower Dracula X-case working with multiple LARGE images in Photoshop, Prof videos for TV use in Premier Pro & Avid, & Call of Duty 4, Falcon 4 & Crysis games etc.
I have been very satisfied with its performance & it doesn't get too hot at all.
This is a more comprehensive review:

Hope this helps.

707788 2008-09-27 05:45:00 I'm using a 9600GT silent with the Hauppage Nova DT to watch freeview on my pc and works a treat. Nyuuji (5460)
707789 2008-09-27 12:11:00 My old 8600GT has only a heat sink.....alot quieter than my 9600GT which has a fan, and also didnt need its own power cable. RusEvo (3572)
