707724 2008-09-25 11:03:00 I am getting the same problem with Outlook too and occasionaly with Word but does not effect any other programs. I have had this problem for about four months.
The programes can be opened successfully providing I starT them as soon as I turn on the PC. After that it can take up to six tries to open. (Word is not as bad as the other two. The other alternative is to turn ofF the PC and start again and be shure to open immediately after start up.
The PC is a four year old desktop, 2.8 GHz, 512 ram, 80 GB, with XP and Office 2000.
I have had two IT Service companies look at it a total of five times with no improvement. They have now tried just about everything including formating the HDD and reloading the programes plus running all available updates. Also tried with Office 2003 and the same problem still persists.
I would be gratefull if someone can help.
Thanks, Keith.

707725 2008-09-25 13:13:00 Remove/disable all extra hardware/attachments and disconnect from the net.
Worth a try...
Of course it sounds strange, but just your disk/screen/keyboard/mouse and try it.

707726 2008-09-25 21:29:00 regarding the Mail - How much mail do you have - it you have a large amount then it will cause problems Pre 2003 can only take 2 Gb Max, that goes for outlook Express as well.

Other issues could be addins that the mail has or possible hardware issues.

First thing to try - Open Word or outlook, click help, click detect and repair, tick restore shortcuts, run the repair.

If the mail opens OK when fresh installed one of your existing mails could also be causing a problem.

Also have a look at This web site here (www.emailaddressmanager.com) - it has a list of possible causes to the mail not opening and solutions.

Also have a look at post Number 3 Here (www.windowsbbs.com)

Test the memory - I doubt its the problem but at least eliminate it - Download memtest86 (www.memtest86.com/) unzip the ISO file and burn the ISO using your burning software ISo section - if you dont have a ISO burner try imgburn (http:).

707727 2008-09-26 10:46:00 Thanks for the ideas !
I did try diconnecting everything and found that it all worked 100% with the internet dissconnected. This was unfortunately not followed up by the It Company at the time.
I will try some of your ideas over the next few days and advise results.
Thanks again, Keith.

707728 2008-09-27 01:08:00 512 RAM isn't much, perhaps install some more? lakewoodlady (103)
707729 2008-09-27 01:41:00 You could also have some spyware on the PC. Download Hijack This (www.trendsecure.com) Put it in its own folder - say on the Desktop - run it and select save a log - once done copy/ paste teh complete log file back here, some one will look to see if the PC has infections etc. wainuitech (129)

Well, then, your problem is solved!!!

OK, this is a pretty weird problem but we have to concentrate on what could survive through a complete rebuild as has happened to your machine. I would be looking at your data as this, presumably, was copied as is from the original machine build. Correct?

Understand, I don't know what your problem is but it could be caused by the opened program scanning its data, finding it needs to go to the Internet, not finding what it wants thus not opening properly. I would save the data and start each program afresh with no data. Do it one at a time and see if your problem disappears at any point.

707731 2008-09-28 00:23:00 I am on vista and had issue with outlook 2003 similar to yours, so went to 2007 and still had issues.
1) they were related to indexing
2) google indexing and vista indexing and outlook indexing = trouble
3) I turned off google, and stoped outlook indexing (some feature I cannot remember where or how now 1 yr later) and never had a problem with outlook since.
4) I lie... EXCEPT for AVAST scanning causing an error now and again if I start outlook to soon after booting.
