| 708785 | 2008-09-30 07:38:00 | :mad:A friend's mouse & keyboard always hang. What is the cause?. Computer is a Pentium 4 running XP Pro. Mouse pointer can move about but cannot activate programme by double clicking. Reload XP using repair. Keyboard and mouse work fine. But they hang again after switching off and on the system. Send to a shop, they say to replace hard disk and graphics card but I doubt they are the problem. Is it a hard disk or software problem? Any easy way out before formating the hard disk as a lost resort. | Taurus (9579) | ||

| 708789 | 2008-09-30 08:21:00 | Three things to try - 1. Start the PC in Safe mode - Keep tapping the F8 key, select Safe mode, see if the keyboard/mouse locks up, if it doesn't its a software problem. 2. this can be done in safe or normal mode if it runs OK - Click Start/run type in eventvwr <Press Enter> look through the event logs both Applications and system - look to see if theres any programs hanging or error messages at the time of the lockups. If there is, copy /paste back the complete Error message. 3. Boot/run the PC from a Linux Live CD, that by passes the windows operating system completely, if you dont have one, or dont know where to borrow one, some of the mags have free copies on the DVD's. Or you can download something like Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com) or Puppy Linux (www.puppylinux.org) - Ubuntu is around 700Mb while puppy is around 90Mb. Note: Cant vouch for Puppy linux though, as I personally test systems like this with Ubuntu obtained from the mags. |

(finger problem) Or pressing the right button when no mouse should be used. Often results in a freeze or mouse/keyboard lock up. |
