2008-09-30 00:24:00 | I'm working on a website which works perfectly from my hard drive, but which shows a couple of problems when uploaded. Woe #1: There should be images on nearly every page, but they appear only on the home page and no other. Examination of the code shows that everything seems OK, but obviously something very basic is wrong! Woe #2: There are two places where I want viewers to be able to download a Word document. One of them works perfectly; the other seems to download OK but Word can't open the downloaded file. I can find no material difference between the two situations yet one works and one doesn't. Check out the whole site (http://www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz) This page (www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz) has the download which does work This page (www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz) has the download which doesn't work Any helpful suggestions gratefully received. Don't assume I understand HTML - my level is very basic. The site was made using a program (which has worked on other occasions!) called Incomedia Evolution.

In the first box, copy and paste this: href="javascript:imPopUpWin('fortyplusest.inet.net.nz);" title=""> HERE</a> and in the second paste: <a href="vacancies.doc">CLICK HERE</a> Then click OK and repace the occurence about 2/3 of the way down the page. | 708709 | 2008-09-30 02:03:00 | How did you get the Word document onto the server? Eg. if you ftp'd it, did you set the transfer mode to binary? If not, that's a plausible reason why the document appears corrupted. |

2008-09-30 02:09:00 | The most common reason for graphics not being displayed is that the URL of the files is correct for your hard drive, not the server, eg: file:///F:/WebWork/graphics/dog.jpg When on the server, if the file is in the root folder with the page, it would just be 'dog.jpg'. If the file is in a folder 'graphics', it would be 'graphics/dog.jpg'. There is no drive letter. If you are inserting the graphics with visual editors such as Front Page & Namo, always check the graphic & file links before posting to server. One way to overcome this is to work on a USB Thumb drive which will simulate the server. Is your home page the only one in the Root?

2008-09-30 04:30:00 | are all gfx name etc lower case and with NO spaces? That will cause all kinds of probs on the host site, which are not apparent when veiwing on your hard drive at all. Good practice to get into using an underscore where you really want a "space" ....example - "this_is_the_graphic.jpg"

2008-09-30 06:22:00 | Unix servers, most of them are, are case sensitive. FTP programs have a facility to change all file names to lower case. If this is done the links will not work. Either make a habit of always using lower case or ensure that the FTP prog doesn't change them. As said previously, do not leave a space between name words. Use _ or -
