708705 2008-09-30 00:24:00 I'm working on a website which works perfectly from my hard drive, but which shows a couple of problems when uploaded.

Woe #1: There should be images on nearly every page, but they appear only on the home page and no other. Examination of the code shows that everything seems OK, but obviously something very basic is wrong!

Woe #2: There are two places where I want viewers to be able to download a Word document. One of them works perfectly; the other seems to download OK but Word can't open the downloaded file. I can find no material difference between the two situations yet one works and one doesn't.

Check out the whole site (http://www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz)

This page (www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz) has the download which does work

This page (www.fortyplusest.inet.net.nz) has the download which doesn't work

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received. Don't assume I understand HTML - my level is very basic. The site was made using a program (which has worked on other occasions!) called Incomedia Evolution.

708706 2008-09-30 00:28:00 Why do you need to use Javascript to download them? Surely using a normal <a href ... > link would work better??

I'll make up a link for you and post it in a few minutes :)

<a href="vacancies.doc">CLICK HERE</a>

708707 2008-09-30 00:36:00 OK, got it working.

What you need to do is open the current_vacancies.htm file in Notepad.

Then, press Ctrl+H (opens Find and Replace).

In the first box, copy and paste this:

href="javascript:imPopUpWin('fortyplusest.inet.net.nz);" title=""> HERE</a>

and in the second paste:

<a href="vacancies.doc">CLICK HERE</a>

Then click OK and repace the occurence about 2/3 of the way down the page.

708708 2008-09-30 01:45:00 Just looked at it again - you've updated the site and it still doesn't work... hmm...

Is the file itself corrupt? (ie when you open it on the server does it work correctly?)

708709 2008-09-30 02:03:00 How did you get the Word document onto the server?
Eg. if you ftp'd it, did you set the transfer mode to binary?

If not, that's a plausible reason why the document appears corrupted.

708710 2008-09-30 02:09:00 The most common reason for graphics not being displayed is that the URL of the files is correct for your hard drive, not the server, eg: file:///F:/WebWork/graphics/dog.jpg

When on the server, if the file is in the root folder with the page, it would just be 'dog.jpg'. If the file is in a folder 'graphics', it would be 'graphics/dog.jpg'. There is no drive letter.

If you are inserting the graphics with visual editors such as Front Page & Namo, always check the graphic & file links before posting to server.

One way to overcome this is to work on a USB Thumb drive which will simulate the server.

Is your home page the only one in the Root?

708711 2008-09-30 04:30:00 are all gfx name etc lower case and with NO spaces?

That will cause all kinds of probs on the host site, which are not apparent when veiwing on your hard drive at all.

Good practice to get into using an underscore where you really want a "space"

....example - "this_is_the_graphic.jpg"

708712 2008-09-30 05:30:00 On top of that, ".jpg" and ".JPG" can sometimes mean different things! Renmoo (66)
708713 2008-09-30 06:22:00 Unix servers, most of them are, are case sensitive.
FTP programs have a facility to change all file names to lower case. If this is done the links will not work. Either make a habit of always using lower case or ensure that the FTP prog doesn't change them.
As said previously, do not leave a space between name words. Use _ or -

708714 2008-10-01 01:10:00 You may want to optimise the images on your front page as 30Kb for a small image is not good

try saving them as a png-8 rather than the png-32 they seem to be, otherwise jpeg is always a good small option
