479821 2006-08-21 07:33:00 Hopefully someone here might be able to help me or point me to someone who can help. Im looking for someone to install a socket into my Car ECU. Basically I have a chip in there now and I would like this removed and a socket soldered into its place. Ive called some places today and although they can do it its very expensive.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

479822 2006-08-21 08:29:00 Highly specialised, skill wise .

The circuit board of the ECU will probably be multi-layered, with internal copper tracks as well as external .

Removal is the most difficult as it carries the risk of internal board damage if the skill level is not correct, that means a new ECU .

Hence it is likely to be expensive, as a cheap job probably means a new ECU, to put it in perspective .

Also the old chip would need to be "sacrificed" by having all the leads chopped off unless a professional desoldering rig was used .

Assuming it's a standard DIL package chip that is socket-compatable as well .

Service manuals I've for some equipment insist that you use solder wick rather than desoldering pumps when removing components.

(When I just want a multi pin component from a scrap board, I sometimes use a propane torch and a bucket of water to catch the component. :D )
