479659 2006-08-23 00:22:00 I heard a rumour that call centres are going overseas. Telecom and several other companies are considering moving their call centres to off shore locations e.g: singapore. This is bad news for frustrated telecom users such as you and I becuase we will be unable to understand the accents. One comapny has already done the move and the end result is bad. Press the purple button gets mangled into "pes the puper buttin" (phonetic spelling).
Is this a good desicion for companies to make?

Please do not be offended by this post, it is not intending any ethnic or racial predjudice.

Singapore for a call center??? If that's the case, probably nothing to do with costs then, maybe to do with streamlining of operations? Cause Singapore is a real expensive place, high labour costs, heck, they even have a higher GDP than us.....

479660 2006-08-26 04:09:00 You will be surprised that most of the calls you made to large organisations are actually sited overseas. Companies like Dell, filemaker, HSBC, AMEX, telecoms (transferring call centre to Philippines), etc. Those that transfer their call centres to Singapore not because they are cheap. In fact they are expensive but they are efficient with high productivity.

Many business have shaifted their operations overseas and benefitted hugely from profit point of view. But it does not benefit us in NZ because of lack of competition. Example - a worker here costs $25000pa in clothings factory. In china, it is half the cost. Not just the labour, everything is cheap as well. A NZ clothing company that has moved operations to China but the price of their products are as expensive as they were before they shift their operations to China.

I bought a foot spray while holidaying in Singapore last year. It's not a sale item and I bought it for $7 or NZ$7.70. The footspray is made in NZ. I bought it again recently in NZ and it costs me $11.95 - same product, same brand, same packaging.

My conclusion is the businesses here are reaping New Zealanders off. They are telling us to buy NZ made products. They should promote productivity and efficiency and there should be more competition. Being fixed income earners, we are ones who suffer the most. Pay increase is only 3.5% this year and look at all the rates increase from ARC, ACC, petrol, metrowater, etc. It's not even enough to cover all these increases. Felt like I am doing welfare work here.

479661 2006-08-26 04:30:00 I had a few problems with IHUG a while back due to the fact that they had outages but I rung them anyway to ask what was happening and there were issues with our account too like crediting back the money after we sent the extra modem that we didnt need.

When I press the button so that I could talk to someone about our account an indian lady answered the phone. She was very hard to talk to because of her accent. It took alot of *pardons* and repeat that again and finally i got there. She was so hard to understand.

However when I press the button the phone so that I could talk to someone about a technical problem the call was transfered to australia .The person who was talking to me was australian.

I'm not quite sure but it seems that the people who are doing the hiring aren't really paying any notice on the way they speak.
