708630 2008-09-29 07:38:00 Hi all. I would like to connect 2 computers together via a network cable. I was given a cross over cable and was told it would work.... when I connect the computers together they connect but nothing happens, it says I must assign an IP address for each machine. How do I do this???

Thanks

708631 2008-09-29 07:50:00 Go into Network connections if both are running XP

Right mouse on both / properties / double click on internet protocol on both and manually put the ips in

If you've got a router you dont need a xover cable

708633 2008-09-29 16:49:00 ips must be in the same range also
ie 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.3 mask of 255.255.255.0 also make sure there are in the same work group ( right click "my Computer" select "properties" select "Computer Name" to change workgroup name click on "change")

This all assumes you have xp home but other os are simular
