708362 2008-09-28 21:41:00 Hello all,

I am problems setting up a hard drive for external use. The hard drive plugs into the computers via USB.

Hard Drive:
Western Digital Caviar
Enhanced IDE Hard Drive 160GB
MDL: WD1600BB - 00FTA0

On Windows XP:
"Mass USB Device Connected" or something similar.
First time used, drivers successfully installed.
My Computer takes longer than usual to load and then the external hard drive is not in there.
In the Administrative Tools folder there are no icons so I can not access Disk Management.
The hard drive shows up in Device Manager as "Generic Void Disk USB Device".

On Windows Vista:
"Mass USB Device Connected" or something similar.
First time used, drivers successfully installed.
In My Computer, the external hard drive is not in there.
The hard drive shows up in Device Manager as "Generic Void Disk USB Device".

In Disk Management, under the tabs it says:
Volume:
Layout: Simple
Type: Basic
File System:
Status: Healthy (EISA Configuration)

Down the bottom it says:
*Disc Icon with red down arrow*
Disk 1
Unknown
Not Initiallized

Thanks.

708364 2008-09-29 20:48:00 I use Paragon Partition Manager Professional and it does not show up?
Only shows the internal hard drive.

708365 2008-09-29 20:56:00 You need to initialize it first. In Disk Management right click on the drive in the left column and choose "Initialize". You should then be able to partition it. CI Sue (14168)

Neither MBR or GPT work. It says "The device is not ready"

708368 2008-09-30 20:34:00 You may need to remove the drive from the USB Enclosure and attach it as a slaved drive, then as Pctek said in post #2, partition/format it.

Failing that - disconnect all working drives, attach the IDE as a main drive, boot from a bootable CD and create / format the drive, attach back into the USB Enclosure and attach teh original drive back in place.

One program that works well is Paragon Disk Manager - there is a free version available from Here (webisee.com) - simply click on the link beside the words "Simply fill out the information " - that takes you off to Paragon's web site, fill out the free reg, then download from one of the 3 links on the original page Shown Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) - when the email comes through enter the details and make the bootable CD - away you go.
