2008-10-03 02:11:00 | See the screenshot: www.imagef1.net.nz I have an LCD monitor connected to my laptop, and the last few days it's started having these red dot/lines, sometimes different colour, like cyan. On a dark background, they show up as red, on a light background they show up as cyan. Happens most often when clicking the Start Menu in Windows, where part of the menu are left behind as these dots/lines. Other info: - Samsung syncmaster 226bw monitor (maybe 6+ months old) - Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop, Windows XP Pro (2+ years old) - external LCD connected to laptop via VGA port So, is monitor on the way out? or display card in the laptop? or something else? Thanks.

2008-10-03 02:42:00 | Maybe Trev's been blinded by using Nortons on his PC. I can see the lines. :p JK Trev. :D So it's only on the external monitor that this is happening, not the built in screen?

Ok tests I've tried so far: - different laptop connecting to external monitor: no problem - went back to original laptop, set the external LCD as primary and single display (ie no display on laptop monitor): no problem - set the laptops monitor as single and primary display (ie no display on extertnal LCD): no problem - went back to dual screen, external LCD as primary, laptop monitor as secondary: red dots/line problem Hmmm.... |

2008-10-03 03:01:00 | Can you try a different monitor on the laptop, or try a 'normal' resolution such as 1024*768 on the external monitor? | wratterus (105) | |
2008-10-03 03:07:00 | Can you try a different monitor on the laptop, or try a 'normal' resolution such as 1024*768 on the external monitor? Just tried a different resolution on external monitor, still has dots/lines. Will try another monitor...

2008-10-03 03:21:00 | Hmm. Often you get those kind of lines on a screen when a graphics card is overheating or the graphics memory is faulty. Does the lappy have build in graphics (Intel or whatever) or is it running a branded card? If you're unsure have a look in the device manager. I'd run a RAM test, although that isn't likely to find any faults, it can't hurt to be sure.
