482817 2006-09-05 10:41:00 Does anyone out there know how pagers work off sky? We have a sky decoder in our fire station that has something to do with our pagers because we have such crap cell phone signal, joemac (9739)
482818 2006-09-05 10:51:00 ?????

the pager system has nothing to with cell phone reception or sky reception, totally different frequency. a firestation may have it owns transmission system and a local pager tranmitter.

A wild guess tells me you obviously have some sort of electronic interference between your pagers and the sky decoder, try switching the decoder off for a few mins and see what:D your cellphone signal is like then.
Failing that ring sky or telecom and ask them what it could be.

482820 2006-09-05 11:12:00 The fire service (volunteers anyway) have two different pager types. One (that we used to have in our area) that works off the telecom network. These would work anywhere that there is telecom signal (not much here). So they changed our system and put a sky decoder in the station and this works only in a 20km or so radius around the station. joemac (9739)
482821 2006-09-05 11:17:00 unless they have done a deal with sky i suspect they have simply done a sat or most likly a microwave dish reciever and there own pager transmitter at the station.

i couldn't tell you how its setup without looking at it. your sure its hooked upto the decoder .....not to a seperate dish?

482822 2006-09-05 19:48:00 No, we definatly have a decoder. Also another box with a LCD screen that slowly counts up and is supposed to be a count of all the pages going out on the sky system country-wide joemac (9739)
482823 2006-09-05 22:42:00 well i'll be.... learn something new everyday :)

i'd be interested to know how its connected to the sky. the sky sat is basicly just a data feed so adding in a pager data wouldn't be hard. the tricky thing is the output into something you can input into the pager transmitter.

are they having problems with it??

482824 2006-09-06 02:25:00 Presumably you still have the little pager units that you clip to your belt. You can't have the volunteers having to go into the station to see if they are being paged. :D

The box with the LCD screen will have two cables. One will get the signal from sky; the other will be for the antenna of its VHF transmitter which repeats the pager signals which it gets from the Sky decoder.

Pagers use a frequency about 156 MHz, so there will probably be a new vertical antenna, maybe a bit less than a metre long, as well as the Sky reception antenna.

Sky will transmit all the pager messages it gets in one channel. The repeater will transmit them all ... not just those for your fire brigade, which is why the LCD screen is showing the country-wide count.
