482720 2006-09-05 07:49:00 I've noticed there seem to be a lot of people who have dazzling headlights, even on dip. It is even worse when you meet them on the brow of a hill.... and yes this is in the city. gibler (49)
482721 2006-09-05 08:18:00 high beam..because they are @#$%s and think you can't get blinded in daylight. low beam is fine and is very good as there is so many idiots on the road who can't see a vehicle even when they hit it. some european cars come with headlights that are always on.

even AA recommend having headlight on in daytime, however they also recommend blinding people with high beams so you can imagen what i think of them.

482722 2006-09-05 08:38:00 I drive an MX5 convertible, and I have fitted proper "Standards approved" DRL's (daytime running lights) that I deem essential, as idiots do not see the low profile of the silver car. But the DRL's work well for safety. And yes, I read all the applicable laws regarding their use before fitting them.

Its not a "get out of my way" statement. It's a "yes it really is a low profile car you moron, do you need glasses?" type of approach. Even the standard lamps were a bit bright I thought, so I fitted an electronic dimmer control that drops them to about 80% and also provides a "soft start" so the halogen filaments will last a long time. They are on with the ignition, but off if any head/diplight or sidelight is on, all electronically logic controlled.

All the proof of the benefits of DRL's are catalogued here if you want to research it. But these are not high beam headlights on cars, that is another species of person.

482723 2006-09-05 09:53:00 Maybe... there is a simple reason behind that? The driver could have forgotten to turn off the hi-light? Or he could have mistakenly turn on the light? Or maybe he was in an emergency and had to tell everyone to get out of his way?

Maybe I am a little bit too optimistic here, on a second thought.

Cheers :)

482724 2006-09-05 09:54:00 Not to my knowledge they don't. They say:
AA says that motorists should:

* Use dipped headlights
and then there's this:
If you wish to be seen more easily in daily traffic consider using your headlights during the daytime as well as at night, and always remember to use your headlights when traveling on 2 lane highways regardless of the time of day.

but thats on Repcos site.

My view is do it if foggy, very rainy or other poor visibilty conditions when on the highways.
And on dipped not full.

482725 2006-09-05 10:57:00 AA says that motorists should:

* Use dipped headlights actually they promoted for some time the use of full beams. this was some time ago.....they also promoted driving along country roads a 30km/h and think even a mention of driving on rural roads in middle of the road ! ! ! grrrr

Maybe... there is a simple reason behind that? The driver could have forgotten to turn off the hi-light? Or he could have mistakenly turn on the light? and they don't look at the dash to see that high beam light glarring back at them ? mayby thats the root to the entire problem....people can't be bothered looking.

482726 2006-09-05 11:44:00 There is nothing wrong using dipped head lights in the day time. I use it all the time when I travel on highways, it's better to be seen than not. SKT174 (1319)

With some european countries (scandanavian ones especially) it is the law that you must have DRL's as standard on your vehicle . Guess what? Accidents in these countries fell by over a third .

I always have my lights on- people can see my car, which is a good thing . . .
