| 482222 | 2006-09-07 06:14:00 | Jack, I used the term tree hugger as a discription of those incoherently strident, bandwaggoning who would kill us off to save ourselves. Or something like that  I read some time ago, some journo's (I think), essay on the levees, deltas, flood cycles, oil (tis funny how this little word should pop up again), etc. It was very interesting, tending to point to dirty pollies and big business. If that is unfair to pollies, in particular, and big business, you may well want to ask what they hell they've been doing, why they haven't been involved and why they haven't been (in the pollies case) looking out for their citizens. Thalidomide and asbestos could turn out to be rather minor disturbances in comparison. |

| 482227 | 2006-09-07 07:12:00 | Believing that it is some sort of conspiracy, or that someone in control is causing it is another way of avoiding the unpleasant realization that this is our destiny. That our uncontrolled breeding and poor management, when the information has been around for years about the inevitable result of the population explosion coupled with the abuse of the resources of Earth, is going to result in some sort of disaster. The good thing is that we here in NZ are probably going to be in a "good" position to watch it all unfold. The writing has been on the wall since the sixties. There is going to have to be a change in attitude by every person on the planet to their usage of resources and the way we live; that isn't likely to happen, and even then it may be too late. Even a massive war or epidemic, extensive flooding of coastal areas isn't going to solve the Global warming problem, in my view. We will see if I am correct, I predict big changes as the extra energy released by our activities and stored in the system (to put it simply) unbalance the relatively benign weather patterns we have experienced for most of human history. |

| 482229 | 2006-09-07 07:32:00 | I'm sure you must have hesitated as you typed that Cicero, a man of your years and experience connected to the internet should already know that the evidence for Global warming is beyond questioning these days and here is a little to keep you informed, as you already should be: www.swissinfo.org Ice core evidence of human impact on CO2 in air: news.yahoo.com "We really are in a situation where something is happening that we don't have any analog for in our records. It is an experiment that we don't know the result of," he added. Professor Peter Smith, of the University of Nottingham in England, said the study showed more needed to be done. "There is an urgent need to find innovative technologies to reduce the impact we are having on our climate," he told the science conference. FAT CHANCE of that happening with Bush and the neo-cons in power in America and Blair in UK and the corporations running rampant all over the world. |

| 482231 | 2006-09-07 08:39:00 | Cicero, I presume you do not believe that a supernatural being, who shall remain unnamed, is watching out for us and making sure that we will all be alright in the long run, therefore your blithe assumption that the Earth will just take care of itself and does not need to be carefully managed and in a sense treasured, must be because ignorance is bliss. | zqwerty (97) | ||
