Does the lappy have build in graphics (Intel or whatever) or is it running a branded card? If you're unsure have a look in the device manager.

I'd run a RAM test, although that isn't likely to find any faults, it can't hurt to be sure.

709462 2008-10-03 06:03:00 There was a thread on here recently about Dell laptops, with Nvidia integrated graphics overheating/burning out

perhaps a similar problem?

709463 2008-10-03 06:50:00 Thanks for the info, could well be the case of a failed or failing nvidia GPU. dyewitness (9398)
709464 2008-10-03 07:52:00 See the screenshot:

I have an LCD monitor connected to my laptop, and the last few days it's started having these red dot/lines, sometimes different colour, like cyan.

On a dark background, they show up as red, on a light background they show up as cyan.

Happens most often when clicking the Start Menu in Windows, where part of the menu are left behind as these dots/lines.

Other info:
- Samsung syncmaster 226bw monitor (maybe 6+ months old)
- Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop, Windows XP Pro (2+ years old)
- external LCD connected to laptop via VGA port

So, is monitor on the way out? or display card in the laptop? or something else?

Thanks.

If you can take a screenshot of the problem, then it is unlikely to be an monitor problem, as you are taking a screenshot of what the graphics card is outputting, rather than what is being displayed on the monitor.

709465 2008-10-03 08:13:00 As above, since you took a screen shot it can't be your monitor.

2 years old Laptop, time to clean out the dust (as previously mentioned its probably over heating).

Get the latest driver video driver (your's may be corrupt).
I fix a lot of PCs and the odd laptop - it's surprising how much dust there is and how much things improve.

709466 2008-10-04 11:51:00 If it's bad enough to show up on a screenshot, then it's faulty/overheating GPU core or memory (or both) / stuffed drivers etc Agent_24 (57)
709467 2008-10-05 04:07:00 Thanks for the input, hehe yeah should be picked up sooner that it was laptop issue not monitor...

I did try the newest listed display drivers, no difference.

The laptop has been off for a day or so and things seemed to behaving normally, does appear to be heat related.

Problem is this laptop gets a heavy workout and heats up fairly quickly.

I've never opened up a laptop before, how hard is it to do (also given that I'm not really a hardware guy)?
