Well...let's see....

IF it were a very early E-Type Jag with a Chevy 350 engine and a THM-700R4 transmission.....

Or an AC-Bristol Cobra with a 302 Chevy engine and all aluminum....

Possibly a 1957 Morgan with a Chevy 302 and a 5-speed manual transmission....

I MIGHT consider one of them...but then as you can see, the UK-ness of the long stroke-rod-throwing-ring-wearing small-bored engines would be missing.... thank goodness :p

481481 2006-09-03 09:04:00 I don't know about reliability of the A4 in particular, but I have found the Euro cars I have owned generally much less reliable than the Japanese. I found the cabin of the A4 very cramped and offers much less room than the current Honda civic. tutaenui (1724)
481482 2006-09-03 12:03:00 I had a friend who brought an Audi sports wagon of some type....was a 1998 something & turbo from memory, anyway he was back at the same yard trading it up for a Caldina GT-T as in the short period of about 4 weeks as it had some many problems once he got it home :(

Cheers

481483 2006-09-03 15:03:00 We used to own an Audi, then a BMW.... Audis are better in terms of reliability than BMWs, granted, both of our european cars were old (more than 7 years), but with the BMW, it spoils every few months or so, and was extremely heavy on the wallet... Audis are slightly better.

If you do want to buy European, consider Volkswagen. At least they build cars that are solid and don't have to be towed to the workshop every few months or so....

But now, for us, we have found our perfect european car! Drove it for 2 whole years now, many times to Wellington from Auckland and return. Over dirt tracks and being stuck in the sand once... No problems at all, other than the usual maintenance check. And what european car issit? The Honda Accord Euro.....

LOL, no kidding... Japanese cars are built to last! And if you can afford more than 20,000 (which is quite the ballpark figure for a Audi in its middle years anyway), you can perhaps buy a brand new Japanese car..... And the engineering and build quality, as well as the toys are quite well spec too!

481484 2006-09-03 15:16:00 One thing...to add to and insure some sort of reliability of an Eureopean vehicle...BUY TWO!

ONE to drive........

...............and one for spare parts!

volkswagons are Audis, and I have seen just as many VW towed into a mates workshop as any other european car

Budget for a set of tyres at frequent intervals....

481488 2006-09-04 01:47:00 Yes, the maintence cost for Euros are definitely higher than Jappas.

I think it breaks down to two category of people who owns a vehicle.

1) couldn't careless look, brand, comfort, handling ... as long as it gets from point A to point B, good mpg and reliable with low maintence cost. Would not take the car out for a sunday drive.

2) looks, brand, comfort, handling is all an important factor, it's not only a car that gets from point A to point B, everytime you drive it you enjoy driving it.

I'd rather have a 8 year old euro than a 2006 jappa. Why? Because even though it's 8 years old, the features on the car will still blow the jappa away.
