709187 2008-10-02 06:22:00 Hi I'm hoping some of you computer teckies can help me out.
Windows update keeps offering this following update
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)

Download size: 5.4 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

I have installed it about 6 times now and all say the installation is successful But everytime update checks for updates it keeps wanting to install it. The only way to now stop it is to hide the update. Anyone got any ideas, Have checked the microsoft site but that sends me around in circles

Win Vista Home Premium with service pack one

Thanks

709188 2008-10-02 06:29:00 Is this through windows auto update? If so try a manual download and install to see if it still happens gary67 (56)
709189 2008-10-02 06:59:00 Yes it still happens with manual checking of updates monies (6310)
709190 2008-10-03 00:17:00 Try this (support.microsoft.com)

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

2. At the command prompt, type ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old, and then press ENTER.

Then reinstall the file you downloaded

Its only if you use the latest IE. So don't.
Relying on MS to protect you is like getting the burglar to guard your door.

709192 2008-10-03 10:54:00 Thanks Speedie, that worked, but then win update came through with another update to that one and that also was being offered everytime win update checked for updates, so after a lot of searching I uninstalled the last update and manually downloaded it from Microsoft and reinstalled. AND NO MORE REPEAT UPDATES... (i hope) monies (6310)
