710663 2008-10-08 04:12:00 Hi my DVD drive has stopped working. In device manager it has a yellow exclamation mark and doesn't show in my computer. I don't know why this has happened. I have tried another DVD drive but have the same problem. I tried to replace cdrom.sys but the system won't let me even in safe mode. I can't reinstall Vista Home Premier as the drive doesn't work. the drives are a Pioneer and a LG. I also can't find any driver to download from the net to use.
I have tried a reg fix I saw taking out the upperfilter it said but no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks

710664 2008-10-08 04:15:00 It shouldnt need any driver. Did you jumper them properly, if both are IDE?

If both of them are on the same IDE connection

Does the BIOS detect both of them?

How are / were you trying to reinstall Vista?? A clean install??

It sounds like you were trying to install Vista within Windows

If it doesnt work if you tried a clean install, it sounds like theyre not jumpered properly (both maybe on Master or Slave)

710665 2008-10-08 04:34:00 No the first drive stopped working so I took it out and tried the other drive. I only have one DVD drive installed. No I wasn't installing Vista at the time. I haven't changed the jumpers. The drive has been working ok for months and has stopped. Possibly a program I have installed in the past has caused a problem with the driver. I have also seen Code 39 come up. I can't install Vista of course while my drive is not working.
Thanks

710666 2008-10-08 04:40:00 BUT, how did you try and install Vista??

Did you reboot , go into the BIOS, then make the cd the boot drive. And boot from the cd/dvd??

If you did and it doesnt work, its probably stuffed

Is the DVD the only thing connected to the IDE connection?

Does the BIOS detect it properly?

710667 2008-10-08 04:51:00 No I have had Vista installed for a long time and the DVD drive has been working fine up until now.
I wasn't installing Vista when it failed.
It shows up in the BIOS ok.
I'm sure the drive is OK and the LG I tried was brand new.
I think something may be wrong with the Vista driver- CDROM.SYS or maybe in the registry.
Thanks,

710670 2008-10-08 05:11:00 No only one IDE channel. asdex (1488)
710671 2008-10-08 05:15:00 So whats the hdd? IDE or SATA? If its IDE jumper it and the DVD Speedy Gonzales (78)
710672 2008-10-08 05:35:00 My hard drives are SATA and the DVD is on the only IDE channel.
Remember the DVD has been running fine up until recently and I haven't changed any hardware.
Thanks
